Here's my critique of the top 40 songs from 3/13/71,which is airing this weekend on terrestrial radio.
#40-"Soul Power"-James Brown-Great example of old school R&B.
#39-"One Toke Over The Line"-Brewer & Shipley-This marked the only top 40 appearance for the duo of Mike Brewer & Tom Shipley-This song was banned on most of the top 40 stations at the time because of obvious drug connotations-Despite the controversy,it went into the top ten.
#38-"Love's Lines Angles & Rhymes"-Fifth Dimension-This is one of their lesser known hits,but it's a great tune nonetheless.
#37-"Do The Push & Pull (Part 1)"-Rufus Thomas-See my critique for "Soul Power".
#36-"Another Day"-Paul Mc Cartney-The first top 40 solo appearance for this former Beatle-Great tune & one of my favorites from him.
#35-"Burning Bridges"-Mike Curb Congrgation-This song was featured in the Clint Eastwood movie "Kelly's Heroes"-Great tune which never receives recurrent airplay.
#34-"Jody's Got Your Girl & Gone"-Johnnie Taylor-See my critique for "Soul Power".
#33-"Wild World"-Cat Stevens-The breakthrough release for this Englishman whose full name is Steven Demetre Georgiou-Great song & one of my favorites from him.
#32-"No Love At All"-BJ Thomas-This is one of his lesser known chart entries,but a great tune nonetheless.
#31-"Theme from Love Story"-Frances Lai & His Orchestra-"Love Story" which starred Ryan O' Neal & Ali Mc Graw was one of the biggest box office hits of the early 70's-This is the first of three versions of the main theme which appear on the 3/13/71-This is the version that appears on the actual soundtrack.
#30-"You're All I Need To Get By"-Aretha Franklin-This Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson composition was first a hit for Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell in 1968-Three years later,this R&B legend released her own version which was fantastic.
#29-"Amazing Grace"-Judy Collins-This hymn was composed by John Newton in 1779-It wound up being the second biggest hit for this singer from Seattle,WA-A timeless classic.
#28-"Blue Monday"-Van Morrison-One of Van's lesser known songs,but a good one nonetheless.
#27-"Watching Scotty Grow"-Bobby Goldsboro-A bona fide guilty pleasure.
#26-"I Hear You Knockin"-Dave Edmunds-In 1955,singer Smiley Lewis took his original version to #2 on the R&B chart-Fantastic remake.
#25-"Oye Como Va"-Santana-Great tune & one of my favorites from them.
#24-"Free"-Chicago-See my critique for "Oye Como Va".
#23-"Theme from Love Story"-Andy Williams-This was the vocal version which became a top 10 hit for this native of Wall Lake,IA-Another timeless classic.
#22-"Rose Garden"-Lynn Anderson-The only pop crossover for this country singer who hailed from Grand Forks,ND-Another timeless classic.
#21-"Knock Three Times"-Dawn-A former #1 smash for this trio which was led by Tony Orlando-Another bonafide guilty pleasure.
#20-"Temptation Eyes"-Grass Roots-Great tune & one of my favorites from them.
#19-"What Is Life"-George Harrison-The second release from his album "All Things Must Pass"-Great tune & one of my favorites from him.
#18-"What's Going On"-Marvin Gaye-One of my all-time favorites from this Motown legend.
#17-"Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You"-Wilson Pickett-One of my all-time favorites from this R&B legend.
#16-"Cried Like A Baby"-Bobby Sherman-One of the last big hits for this actor/singer who was best known as Jeremy Bolt on the TV series "Here Come The Brides"-Another bonafide guilty pleasure.
#15-"Help Me Make It Through The Night"-Sammi Smith-This Kris Kristofferson classic became the lone top 40 hit for this singer from Orange County,CA-It managed to reach #1 on the Billboard country chart.
#14-"Sweet Mary"-Wadsworth Mansion-The only top 40 appearance for this four man group who were based in Providence,RI-Great tune.
#13-"Theme from Love Story"-Henry Mancini-Great interpretation by this Grammy winning composer.
#12-"Mr.Bojangles"-Nitty Gritty Dirt Band-The first of three top 40 appearances for this group which was based in Long Beach,CA-Classic tune written by Jerry Jeff Walker.
#11-"Amos Moses"-Jerry Reed-The first of two top 20 pop hits for this country artist who passed away in 2008-Timeless classic.
#10-"If You Could Read My Mind"-Gordon Lightfoot-The first top 40 appearance for this Canadian artist-Great tune & one of my favorites from him.
#9-"Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted"-Partridge Family-Featured in the TV series of the same name which starred David Cassidy & Shirley Jones-Another guilty pleasure of mine.
#8-"Have You Ever Seen The Rain"/"Hey Tonight"-Creedence Clearwater Revival-Two of my favorite songs from this legendary group.
#7-"Proud Mary"-Ike & Tina Turner-Speaking of CCR,this remake of their 1969 smash became the biggest hit for this husband & wife duo-Another timeless classic.
#6-"Mama's Pearl"-Jackson Five-This almost became their fifth consecutive #1 hit,but it had to settle for a peak position of #2-Great tune & one of my favorites from them.
#5-"She's A Lady"-Tom Jones-The biggest hit for this Welsh singer-Great tune written by Paul Anka.
#4-"Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)"-Temptations-This marked the final time that Eddie Kendricks sang lead-After this song went to #1,he left to pursue a solo career-Another timeless classic.
#3-"For All We Know"-Carpenters-Featured in the movie "Lovers & Other Strangers"-Great tune & one of my favorites from this duo.
#2-"Me & Bobby Mc Gee"-Janis Joplin-The biggest hit for this native of Port Arthur,TX who passed away on 10/4/70-Great tune written by Kris Kristofferson.
#1-"One Bad Apple"-The Osmonds-The breakthrough smash for this quintet of brothers from Ogden,UT-Dare I say it:Another guilty pleasure.
