March 15, 1980Falling off: Barbra Streisand - Kiss Me In The Rain (37) Kenny Loggins - This Is It (33) Kenny Rogers - Coward Of The County (26) Smokey Robinson - Cruisin' (15) 40. Heart - Even It Up (debut) - good song! You wouldn't know they'd be one of the biggest bands of the 80's from this song's low performance compared to their 70's hits, but their 1985 comeback definitely made them one of the biggest bands of the 80's 39. The Whispers - And The Beat Goes On (debut) - good song! I prefer Will Smith's "Miami" though 38. The Knack - Baby Talks Dirty (39) - not bad but definitely "My Sharona" part 2. R.I.P. 37. Peaches & Herb - I Pledge My Love (debut) - No. Just no. 36. J. Geils Band - Come Back (40) - good song but I prefer their big 1982 hits 35. Bette Midler - When A Man Loves A Woman (35) - No. Just no. Give me the Percy Sledge or Michael Bolton versions of this any day! 34. ZZ Top - I Thank You (36) - not bad but I prefer their "Eliminator" era singles 33. The Babys - Back On My Feet Again (34) - good song! I prefer John Waite's later stuff, both solo and with Bad English 32. Air Supply - Lost In Love (38) - great song! My favourite from them Archive: Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love - great song! The perfect song to end the "reign of terror" of "You Light Up My Life", as well as being one of my favourite Bee Gees songs 31. Dr. Hook - Sexy Eyes (debut) - not bad, but they had a few better songs 30. Barry Manilow - When I Wanted You (20) - No. Just no. 29. Steve Forbert - Romeo's Tune (22) - good song, shame he didn't have more success 28. Neil Diamond - September Morn (18) - No. Just no. When I heard something about the morning, I thought of Melissa Manchester's "Fire In The Morning", which wouldn't surprise me if it came up on the next 1980 show. 27. Michael Jackson - Rock With You (14) - great song! One of the best from the late King of Pop 26. Toto - 99 (27) - good song! Shame it didn't peak higher but at least it got top 5 on R&R 25. Billy Preston & Syreeta - With You I'm Boring Again (31) - Oh hell no! I got sick of saying "No. Just no.", and besides, this song is so bad that not even that would suffice! Worst song on the chart, and THAT says a lot because that horrible Chuck Mangione song is on here too! LDD: Chicago - Just You 'N Me - good song! I like most of their 70's stuff, this is no exception 24. Bob Seger - Fire Lake (32) - great song! One of his best 23. Pat Benatar - Heartbreaker (24) - great song! Kate Voegele's also done an excellent live cover version of this song 22. Tommy James - Three Times In Love (30) - not bad but I think he was best in the 60's; still, nice to see him get an 80's hit! Archive: Player - Baby Come Back - good song! Definitely beats the Vanessa Hudgens use of this song's sample 21. The Dirt Band - An American Dream (13) - good song, very summery feel 20. Michael Jackson - Off The Wall (29) - good song, nice disco tune 19. Chuck Mangione - Give It All You Got (21) - No. Just no. With all the good Olympic songs (such as "Reach" and "One Moment In Time"), why did the Lake Placid Olympics have to get such a crappy song? 18. The Eagles - I Can't Tell You Why (25) - great song! One of their best, and as Casey said, one of their most mellow 17. Christopher Cross - Ride Like The Wind (23) - great song! I generally like his early 80's hits, this being no exception 16. Anne Murray - Daydream Believer (12) - good song! Definitely a worthy remake of the Monkees classic 15. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Refugee (17) - great song! One of their best for sure, though I think the best Tom Petty songs are his 90's stuff 14. Ray, Goodman & Brown - Special Lady (19) - No. Just no. LDD: Stonebolt - I Will Still Love You - not bad, definitely a fitting song for an LDD 13. Captain & Tennille - Do That To Me One More Time (7) - meh, nothing special... but what is "that"? Is it the same "that" that Meat Loaf sang about? 12. Blondie - Call Me (28) - great song! One of their best, and an 80's mix show essential Archive: Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive - great song! My favourite from them, the "Saturday Night Fever" era was definitely their strong point 11. Linda Ronstadt - How Do I Make You (16) - good song! I like a lot of her stuff, this is no exception, more of a rock edge here (probably as it's not a remake) 10. Kool & the Gang - Too Hot (11) - good song! They had an impressive streak of hits, and I like most of them 9. Shalamar - The Second Time Around (10) - good song, but I think Jody Watley was better solo Extra: Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs - Stay - not bad, but it was over really fast! Played just because it was short. 8. Rupert Holmes - Him (9) - good song, one of my 80's guilty pleasures 7. Teri DeSario & KC - Yes, I'm Ready (2) - No. Just no. I promise, that's the last time I'll say that in review of the chart, I've had enough! Extra: ABBA - Dancing Queen - great song! One of their best, their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction was very well-justified. 6. The Spinners - Working My Way Back To You (8) - good song, probably my favourite from them though they had some decent stuff in the 70's too 5. Donna Summer - On The Radio (5) - great song! one of her best 4. Andy Gibb - Desire (4) - good song but I prefer his 70's hits 3. Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall (6) - great song! Interesting story about how their music killed all the fish in a pond, never knew rock music could be lethal! 2. Dan Fogelberg - Longer (3) - great song! Probably my favourite from him 1. Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love (1) - great song! Nice Elvis-esque feel they had here Wow, a full fifth of the chart was "No. Just no." songs. Probably one of the worst times in the 80's for me... I bet I'd enjoy some 70's shows more, especially the disco era shows (as they have a lot of upbeat songs). Come to think of it, the 70's show this week is 1978, right in the midst of "Saturday Night Fever", so I wouldn't be surprised if I enjoy that one more... Chicago update: They were an LDD. Prediction for next week: I'll say 1984, it's about time for that year... failing that, I think 1988 is a possibility with "Man In The Mirror" at #1. As for how we base our guesses... mostly by whatever year wasn't done recently, assuming Premiere likes to spread out their shows among the 80's.

I must say, the 1970s version of AT40 repeats doesn’t rotate the years as well as the 1980s version does. They did 1978 just three weeks ago, and since this chart is one week behind this weekend, that means that the charts are just two weeks apart. Honestly, how many songs can change in those two weeks? This heralds back to the American Top 40 Flashback days, when they would place the same year two or three weeks apart (and even that was due to production problems or policy changes or the like). As a result, this commentary will be very similar to my one a few pages back. Oh well, such is life... 40: IT’S YOU THAT I NEED - ENCHANTMENT (debut) - Good song, your typical late 1970s R&B slow jam. 39: WE’LL NEVER HAVE TO SAY GOODBYE AGAIN – ENGLAND DAN & JOHN FORD COLEY (debut) - Great song, one of their best. I have no idea why it zipped up and down the chart so fast, though. 38: YOU REALLY GOT ME – VAN HALEN (debut) - OK song, not sure if I like this or the original by the Kinks better (in the latter, it sounds like they’re singing, “You Really Got Mad”.) 37: RUNNIN’ ON EMPTY – JACKSON BROWNE (40) - Great song, one of my favorites by him! 36: THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND – ANDREW GOLD (39) - Heh, I liked Casey’s clever remark that “a lonely boy has found a friend”. Of course, he was referring to Gold’s last hit, his Top Ten hit from 1977 “Lonely Boy” as well as this song, which became a very popular Long Distance Dedication song, until around 1986, when “That’s What Friends Are For” by Dionne & Friends and the like stole its thunder. As for this song, I like it. 35: HOT LEGS – ROD STEWART (debut) - Meh, this song’s OK, but I prefer other songs by him, such as the one that dropped out this week, “You’re In My Heart”. 34: LADY LOVE – LOU RAWLS (36) - Great song, one of my favorites from him. 33: BEFORE MY HEART FINDS OUT – GENE COTTON (35) - Great song! Short, but sweet. 32: SWEET TALKING WOMAN – ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA (debut) - Great song! One of my favorites by them, and possibly the inspiration for Huey Lewis’ breakthrough hit “Do You Believe In Love” four years later. 31: POOR POOR PITIFUL ME – LINDA RONSTADT (32) - Pretty good song, though I prefer a few others by her. 30: FLASHLIGHT - PARLIAMENT (33) - Meh, there’s better on this show... 29: WHICH WAY IS UP - STARGARD (34) - See my above comment. 28: GOODBYE GIRL – DAVID GATES (30) - Great song! One of my favorites by him with or without Bread. This one sounds similar to “We’ll Never Have To Say Goodbye Again”. OPTIONAL EXTRA: IF YOU LEAVE ME NOW - CHICAGO - Great song! This song was originally placed between songs 38 and 37. 27: THEME FROM CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND – JOHN WILLIAMS (13) - OK song, but I seem to recall that Meco’s version was a tad better. 26: WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS - QUEEN (11) - Great song! One of their best! 25: DUST IN THE WIND - KANSAS (26) - Great song! One of my favorites by them. Surprised that it only moved up one, this low on the chart, especially since it was a Top Ten hit. 24: EBONY EYES – BOB WELCH (27) - Great song, though I prefer “Sentimental Lady”. 23: ALWAYS & FOREVER - HEATWAVE (25) - Beautiful song. This one is on just about every “love song” compilation CD. 22: JACK & JILL - RAYDIO (28) - Ah, the PG-13 version of the classic nursery rhyme. This one’s among my favorite by Raydio. They sure chopped down the song good, though. 21: IF I CAN’T HAVE YOU – YVONNE ELLIMAN (29) - Great song! This was the biggest mover of the week. 20: THE WAY YOU DO THE THINGS YOU DO – RITA COOLIDGE (22) - Good rendition of the Temptations classic. Still, I prefer her two 1977 releases. 19: OUR LOVE – NATALIE COLE (23) - Great song, though I prefer a few others by her. 18: WONDERFUL WORLD – ART GARFUNKEL WITH JAMES TAYLOR & PAUL SIMON (20) - Good remake, but I prefer the original by Sam Cooke. 17: FALLING – LeBLANC & CARR (21) - Great song. 16: HAPPY ANNIVERSARY – LITTLE RIVER BAND (18) - OK song, but one of my least favorite songs by them. Everytime I hear this song, I think of Delilah’s goofy “Happy Anniversary” song that she sings on her show, to the tune of the William Tell Overture. 15: HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE – THE BEE GEES (10) - Wow, I forgot that this song was still around. Anyway, as I stated in my topic about the 1980 show, this is my favorite single by the Brothers Gibb from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. OPTIONAL EXTRA: ON BROADWAY - GEORGE BENSON - This was OK, but I prefer a few of his AC-only hits (i.e. “Breezin’” and “I Just Want To Hang Around You”) 14: THUNDER ISLAND – JAY FERGUSON (16) - Good song. I believe this is the only song by him that I know. 13: WHAT’S YOUR NAME – LYNYRD SKYNYRD (15) - Good song, though I’m generally not a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan. 12: NAME OF THE GAME - ABBA (14) - Meh, not a big fan of this one. 11: PEG – STEELY DAN (12) - Great song! One of my favorites by them! 10: CAN’T SMILE WITHOUT YOU – BARRY MANILOW (17) - This is what my grandmother said the time I hid her teeth No, seriously, I like this song. 9: JUST THE WAY YOU ARE – BILLY JOEL (8) - Great song! All four releases from The Stranger are great. 8: I GO CRAZY – PAUL DAVIS (9) - Good song, though I generally prefer his later songs. 7: DANCE, DANCE, DANCE, YOWSAH, YOWSAH YOWSAH - CHIC (6) - No. Just no. 6: STAYIN’ ALIVE – THE BEE GEES (2) - My second favorite Bee Gees single from Saturday Night Fever. Oddly enough, the following week, with “Night Fever” at the top spot, this song got a second wind and moved back to #2. 5: LAY DOWN SALLY – ERIC CLAPTON (7) - Good song, though I prefer several other songs by him. But hey, as long as it isn’t the grossly overplayed “Change The World”... 4: EMOTION – SAMANTHA SANG (4) - Good song, though kind of overplayed. 3: SOMETIMES WHEN WE TOUCH – DAN HILL (3) - Good song, though I preferred his late-80s and early-90s material. OPTIONAL EXTRA: MORE THAN A WOMAN - TAVARES - Good song. There were two versions of this song and this was actually the most obscure. The one people are more familiar with, of course, is the one by the Bee Gees. That song got the airplay, but since it wasn’t released as a single, that helped this song get all the sales points. Not sure which version I prefer. 2: NIGHT FEVER – THE BEE GEES (5) - Meh, this song was quite overplayed. It’s OK, but nothing I’d go out of my way to listen to. 1: LOVE IS THICKER THAN WATER – ANDY GIBB (1) - Good song, but I prefer other songs by him such as “I Just Want To Be Your Everything” and “An Everlasting Love”. Predictions for next week: I'd say either 1973 or 1974. Many people are hoping for the former, since that year hasn't yet been featured this year.

Extra: Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs - Stay - not bad, but it was over really fast! Played just because it was short. Casey mentioned a few other #1's that were less than two minutes long, but he overlooked the Box Tops' (RIP Alex Chilton) "The Letter", which clocks in at 1:58 (I have the 45; the B-side, "Happy Times", is even shorter, at 1:42.)

AT40: The 80s - March 27, 2010
This week's presentation: March 28, 1987
I have a question. Why 1987 again so soon? We’ve heard that year three times already this year. Hmm, this is beginning to remind me of the AT40 Flashback thing back in 2002. I wonder if there was another show slated to run back in February... Well, anyway, at least this show is a month and a half after the last February show (such was not the case with that and the January 1987 show, which were spaced less than a month apart.) And at least we don’t have to hear the April 25 show for the fourth year in a row. Anyway, here’s my commentary about this week’s show.
Droppers: I’LL BE ALRIGHT WITHOUT YOU - JOURNEY (30) - Great song, one of my favorites. Shame that it fell off (but at least we did hear it on the last 1987 show) WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME - CHICAGO (29) - Great song again. We’ve heard this one on the past TWO 1987 shows. KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF - GEORGIA SATELLITES (28) - This is another song we heard on the two 1987 shows we’ve heard this year. I wasn’t a big fan of it, however, so no huge loss. (Coincidentally, those were the same three droppers on the R&R chart that same week. However, the debut songs were a different story - the charts only had one debut in common and the other two had debuted on the R&R chart the week before).
LW#1: LEAN ON ME - CLUB NOUVEAU - I’ll comment on this song later.
40: SERIOUS - DONNA ALLEN (debut) - Meh, not a big fan of this song at all. I mean, how many times does she have to say, “Talk, talk about serious”? Enough is enough. 39: LA ISLA BONITA - MADONNA (debut) - Nice song - takes me to a tropical paradise. 38: I WILL BE THERE - GLASS TIGER (40) - Great song! We all know that my favorite song by Glass Tiger is “Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone)”. This song is a very close second. 37: LIGHT OF DAY - THE BARBUSTERS (JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS W/ MICHAEL J. FOX) (38) - Good song - reminds me a little of “R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.” by John Cougar Mellencamp 36: CAN'TCHA SAY (YOU BELIEVE IN ME)/STILL IN LOVE - BOSTON (debut) - Great song! Definitely one of my favorites by them! 35: WHAT'S GOING ON - CYNDI LAUPER (39) - I remember hating this song when it was on the charts. Now, I like it, even better than the original by Marvin Gaye. 34: (I JUST) DIED IN YOUR ARMS - CUTTING CREW (37) - Wow, that’s a weak move for a future number one song! (However, I seem to recall that they made up for it the following week). Anyway, I’m not a fan of this song. One of the most overplayed songs of 1987.33: SMOKING GUN - THE ROBERT CRAY BAND (36) - Great song! This was the first of at least two stretch stories told about him during this song’s run (the other was its final week on the chart - April 25) 32: CANDY - CAMEO (22) - Meh, I’m not a big Cameo fan. This song is my favorite of their three Hot 100 hits from their Word Up album, and that’s not saying much. LDD: HIP TO BE SQUARE - HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS - Probably my least favorite song from them. But it was indeed appropriate for the dedication, written by a guy who was driving drunk and got into an accident that severely injured him and his two friends. OPTIONAL EXTRA: WITH OR WITHOUT YOU - U2 - Way overplayed. At least I don’t dislike this song as I did during this song’s chart run. This song was another of the three debuts on the R&R chart this week. 31: I WANNA GO BACK - EDDIE MONEY (20) - Great song, one of my favorites from him. Too bad they cut out the second verse. 30: COME AS YOU ARE - PETER WOLF (34) - Great song - possibly my favorite of his solo hits. 29: DOMINOES - ROBBIE NEVIL (33) - Great song. Interesting story about domino tumbling, as well. 28: BRAND NEW LOVER - DEAD OR ALIVE (18) - Good song. Not sure if I prefer this or “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)”. 27: (YOU GOTTA) FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT TO PARTY - BEASTIE BOYS (15) - Not a big fan of this song anymore, but I could totally relate to it back when it was on the charts, as I was fifteen back then. 26: LOOKING FOR A NEW LOVE - JODY WATLEY (35) - This song was just debuting, at #34 on the R&R chart this week. It must have had a lead in sales (which is feasible, since it was #1 for the second week on the soul charts). Anyway, this song’s OK, but as I’ve said before, most of her songs sound so much alike. 25: STONE LOVE - KOOL & THE GANG (32) - Good song, my second favorite release from Forever, behind the AC-only hit “Special Way”. EXTRA: FOOTLOOSE - KENNY LOGGINS - Good song. And interesting story behind it, about the town of Henrietta, Oklahoma banning public dancing. 24: THE HONEYTHIEF - HIPSWAY (31) - Great song! Very catchy chorus (“The light of deep regret, let me see what I don’t get”). I felt that this song was quite underrated. 23: AS WE LAY - SHIRLEY MURDOCK (25) - Great song, even if it is about infidelity. Sounds a little like something from the sixties. 22: YOU GOT IT ALL - THE JETS (13) - Great song! My favorite song by them. I had no idea that Rupert Holmes wrote this (though I did notice that it’s on the same colorful MCA label on which Rupert recorded some of his songs, including “Escape”, which was released on both MCA and Infinity). 21: WALKING DOWN YOUR STREET- THE BANGLES (27) - The band that had a thing about walking back in 1987, as illustrated by the titles of their two hits from that year. Anyway, you know that I prefer this over the other one! Though I did prefer their first two hits from the Different Light album, but this one’s still great. OPTIONAL EXTRA: BIG LOVE - FLEETWOOD MAC - This song was OK, but I preferred many others by them. 20: THE FINER THINGS - STEVE WINWOOD (26) - Good song, but I prefer others by him. 19: LIVIN' ON A PRAYER - BON JOVI (12) - Not a big fan of this song. Like the Cutting Crew’s song, this was one of the most overplayed songs of 1987. 18: RESPECT YOURSELF - BRUCE WILLIS (8) - This song was OK, but Bruce was better at acting. 17: THAT AIN'T LOVE - REO SPEEDWAGON (23) - I generally prefer their power ballads, but this one is great, too. U93 (WNDV in South Bend) added this song a few weeks before it hit the charts. 16: BIG TIME - PETER GABRIEL (10) - “Hi, there!” This song is pretty good, though it did get quite overplayed (though not as much as his previous two hits). 15: WHAT YOU GET IS WHAT YOU SEE - TINA TURNER (22) - Great song, and quite underrated. 14: SIGN O' THE TIMES - PRINCE (24) - This song’s pretty good, though I prefer many others by him. 13: JACOB'S LADDER - HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS (7) - Good song. They sure don’t play this song very often anymore. 12: MIDNIGHT BLUE - LOU GRAMM (19) - Good song, though I prefer his two 1989-90 songs. 11: LET'S GO - WANG CHUNG (16) - Good song. I prefer this over their two overplayed hits “Dance Hall Days” and “Everybody Have Fun Tonight”. 10: I KNEW YOU WERE WAITING FOR ME - ARETHA FRANLKLIN & GEORGE MICHAEL (17) - Great song. They sounded good together. OPTIONAL EXTRA: YOU KEEP ME HANGING ON - KIM WILDE - Great song - I prefer this one over the original. 9: DON'T DREAM IT'S OVER - CROWDED HOUSE (14) - I love this song! I do slightly prefer “Something So Strong”, but this one isn’t far behind at all. 8: THE FINAL COUNTDOWN - EUROPE (11) - Good song, though I preferred the two follow-ups. 7: COME GO WITH ME - EXPOSE (9) - Meh, I didn’t care for this one. “Point Of No Return” was much better. 6: SOMEWHERE OUT THERE - LINDA RONSTADT & JAMES INGRAM (5) - Great song! One of my favorites by both artists involved. 5: MANDOLIN RAIN - BRUCE HORNSBY & THE RANGE (4) - Great song! And, wouldn’t you know it, they cut the second verse! 4: TONIGHT, TONIGHT, TONIGHT - GENESIS (6) - It’s okies, but I prefer many others by them. This song always makes me thirsty for a beer. LDD: AGAINST ALL ODDS - PHIL COLLINS - Great song, and very sad Long Distance Dedication. I hope that the cousin of the writer of the dedication eventually turned up, as he went missing after a trip to Biloxi, Mississippi. 3: LET'S WAIT AWHILE - JANET JACKSON (2) - Good song - the abstinence anthem of the 1980s. OPTIONAL EXTRA: ALWAYS - ATLANTIC STARR - Great song. A song that became a popular wedding song. 2: NOTHING'S GONNA STOP US NOW - STARSHIP (3) - Though I prefer several others by them, this one is great! 1: LEAN ON ME - CLUB NOUVEAU (1) - This song is OK, but it’s much better than the original.
Predictions for next week: There’s still a chance we could hear the March 27, 1988 show but I have a feeling that, if they play 1988 next week, they’ll go with the April 3 show. Since they’ve avoided doing repeats for the past year, we probably won’t hear April 9, since they featured that one two years ago. April 16, of course, is out because Keri Tombazian hosted that one. I have a feeling that they might hold off on 1988 until late April. If that’s the case, I’ll go with 1984 (most likely, April 7) for next week’s show. 1982 isn’t out of the question either.

6: SOMEWHERE OUT THERE - LINDA RONSTADT & JAMES INGRAM (5) - Great song! One of my favorite Disney songs. This isn't a Disney song, actually. A American Tail was made by a different studio (MGM? I don't recall). I'm kinda OCD about that kind of thing.

"An American Tail" was a Universal Pictures release.

AT40 March 28, 1987 Droppers: JOURNEY - I'LL BE ALRIGHT WITHOUT YOU - Eh, no big loss there, really, but it was just "OK", not their best. CHICAGO - WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME - Excellent song, I may always love this song to the end! So sorry it had to depart... GEORGIA SATELLITES - KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF - This song totally cracks me up and it is a good one! I also enjoyed "Battleship Chains" of which I truly believed would become their 2nd top 40 hit. LW#1: LEAN ON ME - CLUB NOUVEAU - I'm going to be original here, I'll comment on it now! I love this much more than the original ten fold! This has me "jammin"!!! 40: SERIOUS - DONNA ALLEN - Classic 80s R&B dance song! I can never go wrong with this one! She went on to chart with three more R&B top 40 hits including her #3 cover of "Joy & Pain" by Maze. 39: LA ISLA BONITA - MADONNA - I did not really care for this record at first, but now I'm really enjoying this each time. You know the intro to this song is similar to the 1992 version of the late Robert Palmer's song "Every Kinda People". Both songs have that Latin flavour from beginning to the end. 38: I WILL BE THERE - GLASS TIGER - Boo! My least favourite Glass Tiger song. I'm just not feeling this one. Next! 37: LIGHT OF DAY - THE BARBUSTERS (JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS W/ MICHAEL J. FOX) - Yes, it does sound similar to "R.O.C.K. In The USA", I noticed that for years. I thought that this song was going to chart higher, it was one of their best IMO. 36: CAN'TCHA SAY (YOU BELIEVE IN ME)/STILL IN LOVE - BOSTON - Can't say RIP, I usually frown at voluntary passages. I'm talking about of course Brad Delp. Him and his work will not be forgotten, and this song in part proves it. It's one of favourites from the LP "Third Stage", I just couldn't get into "Amanda". 35: WHAT'S GOING ON - CYNDI LAUPER - The cover was a great one, at the same time I prefer the Marvin Gaye version. 34: (I JUST) DIED IN YOUR ARMS - CUTTING CREW - My sister hated this song, not sure how feels about it today. It was kinda annoying at first when it first charted in their homeland, the UK back in the fall of 1986. As soon as it reached the US charts, I suddenly got into this. 33: SMOKING GUN - THE ROBERT CRAY BAND - This guy and his band are great performer. He's definitely not part of the mainstream and I doubt very seriously if he gives a rats ass. This is one of their best songs. 32: CANDY - CAMEO - The song may be annoying to some, but I certainly do like this one, it's one of my favourites from the "Word Up" CD next to "Back And Forth". LDD: HIP TO BE SQUARE - HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS - I have always liked this more than "Stuck With You". I wish this would have been a Billboard #1 as well. 31: I WANNA GO BACK - EDDIE MONEY - One of his best records, I love it! 30: COME AS YOU ARE - PETER WOLF - I just can't stop loving this song each time I hear. It's another IPOD banger! 29: DOMINOES - ROBBIE NEVIL - And then here comes another IPOD banger, I've been spinning the "single remix" lately. 28: BRAND NEW LOVER - DEAD OR ALIVE - They say three is a charm, I play this quite frequently just as well. As it stand on my Top Most Played chart it is charting at #46. 27: (YOU GOTTA) FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT TO PARTY - BEASTIE BOYS - Classic party song, I still like even in my 30s. 26: LOOKING FOR A NEW LOVE - JODY WATLEY - Another 80s Classic R&B smash! 25: STONE LOVE - KOOL & THE GANG - One of their best songs, I like this more than the somewhat bland song "Victory". TX: FOOTLOOSE - KENNY LOGGINS - Hot song and movie! It's a classic! 24: THE HONEYTHIEF - HIPSWAY - Excellent song! I wish that it had charted a little bit higher. 23: AS WE LAY - SHIRLEY MURDOCK - Classic R&B song and still a "quiet storm" favourite today. 22: YOU GOT IT ALL - THE JETS - Good song, but not really my favourites by them. I prefer their upbeat songs a little more. 21: WALKING DOWN YOUR STREET- THE BANGLES - Whoa! In the the end it missed the top ten just by an ity ity bit peaking at #11. On Scott Shannon's "Rockin America" it got to #10. This is one of my favourite Bangles songs next to "If She Knew What She Wants". 20: THE FINER THINGS - STEVE WINWOOD - The single version of this song which has been slightly remixed is the one I prefer. This is one of my favourite songs by this English blue-eyed soul man. 19: LIVIN' ON A PRAYER - BON JOVI - Overplayed, but it's still a rockin classic to me. 18: RESPECT YOURSELF - BRUCE WILLIS - Gee, I played this about a few days ago on my IPOD at the gym. Yes he's an actor, but he did an awesome job with the Staple Singers cover. I like both versions equally. 17: THAT AIN'T LOVE - REO SPEEDWAGON - I'm not a fan of Reo Speedwagon but I truly enjoy a couple of their songs such as this one. I get a rise when this comes on occasions after not hearing this for a long period of time. 16: BIG TIME - PETER GABRIEL - Ipod banger at best! I love it! I heard that one just a couple of days ago just as well! 15: WHAT YOU GET IS WHAT YOU SEE - TINA TURNER - Not R&B entry for this one, but this also one of her best songs. 14: SIGN O' THE TIMES - PRINCE - This is really an excellent song, but it's not something I'd rush out and buy, you know. I prefer many others by him. I should drop by his studio one day, it's only about 45 minutes from where I live, in Chanhassen to be exact. 13: JACOB'S LADDER - HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS - One of their better songs from their "Fore" LP besides the overplayed "Stuck With You". 12: MIDNIGHT BLUE - LOU GRAMM - Hot song, it's also one of his best next to "Just Between You & Me". 11: LET'S GO - WANG CHUNG - You don't hear this one too often on the radio these days, and this one of my all time favourite records ever. I liked this from day one! 10: I KNEW YOU WERE WAITING FOR ME - ARETHA FRANLKLIN & GEORGE MICHAEL - Did you know that George Michael had to fly to the States to film the video with the Queen of Soul? Yeah, because she really hasn't gotten over her fear of flying. Anyway, this another one of my favourite duets, but not R&B. To me it's a little more poppy in sound. You see I was at one website and it listed the top 15 R&B duets ever and this one never came to mind. Usually songs by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Cherrelle & Alexander O'Neal and then Rene' and Angela come to mind and are still staples at Urban radio. 9: DON'T DREAM IT'S OVER - CROWDED HOUSE - You know, I thought that this was some sort of peace song, but as it turns out it was kinda a "cool off" song that one of the members wrote to his wife or girlfriend after a fight. Six Pence None The Richer covered this in 2003. I like both versions quite a bit. 8: THE FINAL COUNTDOWN - EUROPE - This is really a bad song, it belongs on the "Walll Of Shame". I'm not saying "no", yet at the same time I feel like this one of the most embarrassing records to ever come out of the 80s looking back. Of course I did like this as a teenager. 7: COME GO WITH ME - EXPOSE - One of my all time favourite songs ever! 6: SOMEWHERE OUT THERE - LINDA RONSTADT & JAMES INGRAM - Not to bad, I thought for sure that it would be another #1 song by a duo even it's a one time thing. 5: MANDOLIN RAIN - BRUCE HORNSBY & THE RANGE - I actually like this song more than "The Way It Is". Another great song. 4: TONIGHT, TONIGHT, TONIGHT - GENESIS - One of their best songs. In the UK an average listener would have noticed that they named one of their previous song titles within the song such as "In Too Deep". Over there it was the band's follow-up to "Invisible Touch". Of course if you own the latter title track LP, you'd probably notice. Jody Wately's 2nd top 40 hit "Don't You Want Me" also mentions the title of her previous hit "Looking For A New Love". LDD: AGAINST ALL ODDS - PHIL COLLINS - Great great song, it is a indeed a tear-jerker especially after going through a break-up. 3: LET'S WAIT AWHILE - JANET JACKSON - Yes, I love the "single remix"! 2: NOTHING'S GONNA STOP US NOW - STARSHIP - Yeah, it's one of their most "poppy" records ever, but you gotta love it. Thanks to Narada Michael Walden this helped give the group their 3rd chart topper. I remember hearing this at a school dance and I still picture this as "strange" because I saw a few people try to dance to this and not slow dance. 1: LEAN ON ME - CLUB NOUVEAU - See #1 LW

OK, so...I lied, I did get to listen to this week's show after all. Twice, actually!
This week's chart definitely feels like it's in sort of a "transition" mode, with not many songs filtering down to the 30s, causing a slowdown over there, but then the upper 20s/lower teens seems like sort of a soft part of the chart with songs flying up and crashing down. I notice something of a "vacuum effect" for the moves for REO and Tina.
What's also very interesting is that this was apparently the last show with the "mid-80s" jingle set, if I'm reading the recent posts from the 80s thread correctly. I can't help but notice that we got both the first and last shows with those jingles this year...and oddly enough, both shows' charts feel like transition periods with the old singles being flushed out and the new ones being flushed in.

AT40 The 80s April 3, 1982
Hour One LW#3: WE GOT THE BEAT – THE GO-GO’S - I'll comment on all three later LW#2: OPEN ARMS – JOURNEY LW#1: I LOVE ROCK N’ ROLL – JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS
40: GET DOWN ON IT – KOOL & THE GANG - You know when I hear this record, at times think of Snoop Dogg's sampled song from the "Wild Wild West" soundtrack.
39: POP GOES THE MOVIES PART 1 - MECO - Eight movies themes for the price of one, huh? But wait there's more on the 12" single or LP, right? Anyway this got as far as #35. He never matched the success of the "Star Wars Theme". I do like his co-production of "Never Can Goodbye" by Gloria Gaynor, though. This song does nothing for me.
38: JUST CAN’T WIN ‘EM ALL – STEVIE WOODS - I'm not sure what to call him because both of his hits missed the top 20. And then guess what this is his peak position. I'm personally impressed by two of his top 40 hits. He is the cousin of another one time singer but mainly an actor Michael Phillip Thomas. 37: THEME FROM MAGNUM P.I. – MIKE POST - One of his lowest peaking but highly recognizable songs. This climbed as high as #25. 36: TAKE IT EASY ON ME – THE LITTLE RIVER BAND _ I like John Farnham quite a bit because of his non-US solo international hit from 1986 called "You're The Voice". Seems that since he took over lead vocals for this band later, the top ten hits suddenly came to a halt. After two top 40 hits with the band that was it for all of them in the US. This was the band's final top ten smash, not that I'm into this anyway. 35: LEADER OF THE BAND – DAN FOGELBERG - This OK. The oldest song in the top 40 for the week, a whopping 15 weeks!
34: SPIRITS IN THE MATERIAL WORLD – THE POLICE - I did not hear this song until the summer of this year when they played the LP at a youth center where I was growing up. Around this time I was mostly into R&B, I never even touched a "pop" station again until the summer of 1984.
33: MIRROR, MIRROR – DIANA ROSS - This is a classic R&B smash that received mega-airplay on R&B stations. I love it even though it had a load of guitar riffs within the song, which was usually a "turn off".
32: I’VE NEVER BEEN TO ME - CHARLENE - Motown signed her? If it wasn't for Scott Shannon (who worked for Z-100), this song and then the lady would have never been heard of,. Now that it is 2010, guess what, DJs can't do that kind of thing ANYMORE! I'm not feeling this but it got all the way up to #3 after five years and given a 2nd chance.
Optional Extra - HUMAN LEAGUE - Don't You Want Me - I heard this on an R&B station and I did not like it at first. They used to use this as background music for sports intermissions/commercials. Now I call this an ultimate classic, the "cocktail waitress" really cracks me up.

AT40: The 80s - April 3, 2010
This week’s presentation: April 3, 1982
Well, it looks like I was wrong with both of my predictions I made last week (although I did casually mention that 1982 wasn’t out of the question). This song was a former American Top 40 Flashback show, and the very first one to be featured on that series, on the weekend of March 31, 2001. Not sure why they held off on that year for so long, but that’s another story for another time. Meanwhile, here is this week’s commentary:
Droppers: #38: Tell Me Tomorrow - Smokey Robinson - Don’t remember how this one goes, but as I recall from hearing it on last year’s March, 1982 show, it was pretty decent. #37: Through The Years - Kenny Rogers - Great song, shame that it fell off. This song became a very popular Long Distance Dedication request over the next five or so years. #36: When All Is Said And Done - Abba - As I recall, this song was OK, but not quite as good as songs by them like “Dancing Queen” and “Winner Takes It All”. #34: Daddy’s Home - Cliff Richard - Good remake of the Shep & The Limelites song.
Wow, no songs dropping out of the chart from way up in the Top 20? I thought this was 1982! Oh well, now on to the countdown...
LW#3: WE GOT THE BEAT – THE GO-GO’S LW#2: OPEN ARMS – JOURNEY LW#1: I LOVE ROCK N’ ROLL – JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS
Those will be commented on later on.
40: GET DOWN ON IT – KOOL & THE GANG (debut) - Meh, this one was OK, but one of my least favorite of their 80s hits. 39: POP GOES THE MOVIES PART 1 - MECO (debut) - Good song. I always liked Meco’s disco interpretations of movie songs. I heard this one for the very first time on this show. Can’t say I recognized any of the songs, though (except for the 20th Century Fox theme). 38: JUST CAN’T WIN ‘EM ALL – STEVIE WOODS (39) - Great song and quite underrated, as the song would fall off the following week. It does sound a little out of place for 1982 - sound more like something from the late 70s. 37: THEME FROM MAGNUM P.I. – MIKE POST (debut) - Just like Meco did good jobs with movie songs, Mike Post’s TV show themes were also great and this one is no exception, although I don’t believe I’ve ever watched Magnum P.I. before. 36: TAKE IT EASY ON ME – THE LITTLE RIVER BAND (33) - Great song, one of their best (and people didn’t seem to be getting tired of it fast, based on its slow drop and the fact that it had been on the chart for 15 weeks). 35: LEADER OF THE BAND – DAN FOGELBERG (32) - The same went for this song, as it was also falling slow and had been on the chart for quite some time. The only difference is that it wasn’t one of my favorite songs by Fogelberg, although it was still a good one. 34: SPIRITS IN THE MATERIAL WORLD – THE POLICE (31) - And the slow drops continue. Must have been a slow week in new releases. Anyway, this one is a good one - one of their better songs. 33: MIRROR, MIRROR – DIANA ROSS (22) - No. Just no. 32: I’VE NEVER BEEN TO ME - CHARLENE (40) - A lot of people I know don’t like this song, so I guess you could call it a guilty pleasure. I’m glad that it was re-released and became a Top Ten hit. OPTIONAL EXTRA: DON’T YOU WANT ME - HUMAN LEAGUE - Great song, my favorite song by them! 31: TONIGHT I’M YOURS – ROD STEWART (20) - Good song, sounds a lot like his last hit, “Young Turks”. 30: DID IT IN A MINUTE – DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES (debut) - Great song! One of my favorites from them! 29: SHAKE IT UP – THE CARS (13) - Meh, this one was quite popular, but wasn’t one of my favorites from them at all (though I’d rather listen to it than their song from autumn, 1984, “Drive”). 28: BABY MAKES HER BLUE JEANS TALK – DR. HOOK (35) - Good song, but I prefer “Better Love Next Time” from early 1980. LDD: YOU NEEDED ME – ANNE MURRAY - Great song, and very appropriate for the dedication. 27: ON THE WAY TO THE SKY – NEIL DIAMOND (27) - Good song, but I prefer others by him (such as his hit “Yesterday’s Songs” from earlier in the year). 26: JUKE BOX HERO - FOREIGNER (30) - Good song, but I prefer their 70s hits (as well as their two Top 40 hits from 1985). 25: GOIN’ DOWN – GREG GUIDRY (29) - Great song! Too bad it was his only Top 40 entry. 24: 867-5309/JENNY – TOMMY TUTONE (28) - Ah, the nuisance phone call song! I actually tried to call this number once, but got a recorded message that my call cannot be completed as dialed, since the 867 prefix was not in my area. 23: MY GUY – SISTER SLEDGE (25) - Interesting remake of the Mary Wells classic. I actually prefer this version. 22: BOBBIE SUE – THE OAK RIDGE BOYS (12) - This song is much better than that dreck from the year before. That would be “Elvira”, which Casey mentioned was the biggest juke box hit of 1981. Still, this was not quite my favorite song on the chart this week. OPTIONAL EXTRA: GENIUS OF LOVE - THE TOM TOM CLUB - No. Just no. 21: NOBODY SAID IT WAS EASY (LOOKING FOR THE LIGHTS) – LE ROUX (26) - Great song! I’ve heard this song many times on my Barry Scott Lost 45's, although on this show, they played a slightly longer version than on the CD. 20. FIND ANOTHER FOOL - QUARTERFLASH (24) - Good song, but my least favorite of their three charted hits. 19: CENTERFOLD - THE J. GEILS BAND (7) - One of the biggest songs of 1982, and one of my favorite #1 songs from that year. This has held up quite well despite overplay. EXTRA: LOVE ME DO – THE BEATLES - Meh, not one of my favorite Beatles songs by any means. 18: ’65 LOVE AFFAIR – PAUL DAVIS (23) - Great song! One of his best! 17: ONE HUNDRED WAYS – QUINCY JONES FEATURING JAMES INGRAM (21) - Great song! One of my favorite James Ingram songs. Reminds me a little of the Hill Street Blues theme. I was disappointed that this song didn’t hit the Top 100 of 1982 show (though it couldn’t have missed by much). 16: TAKE OFF – BOB & DOUG McKENZIE (16) - LOL! Funny song, just like their version of the “Twelve Days Of Christmas”. Geddy Lee of Rush sings the chorus. 15: (OH) PRETTY WOMAN – VAN HALEN (17) - Good version of the Roy Orbison classic. 14: EDGE OF SEVENTEEN – STEVIE NICKS (19) - Great song! I remember hearing this song quite a lot in the spring of 1982. 13: SHOULD I DO IT – THE POINTER SISTERS (15) - Great song! Has a 60s feel to it. 12: DO YOU BELIEVE IN LOVE – HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS (18) - Great song - the song that started it all off for one of the biggest acts of the 1980s. OPTIONAL EXTRA: ALWAYS ON MY MIND - WILLIE NELSON - Good song, but I preferred the Pet Shop Boys techno remake from 1988 - hopefully, we’ll hear that version on the next 1988 show. 11: SWEET DREAMS – AIR SUPPLY (5) - Meh, one of my least favorite songs by them (though I prefer it over the miserably depressing “All Out Of Love”). 10: KEY LARGO – BERTIE HIGGINS (11) - Great song, inspired by Humphrey Bogart’s movie of the same name. 9: PAC-MAN FEVER – BUCKNER AND GARCIA (9) - Interesting story about the Pac Man products, like t-shirts, caps, and pajamas, to name a few. But Casey made a mistake when he was talking about the cartoons in Ms. Pac Man. He said that in the first one, they meet and chase each other around. Um, no, he’s mixing the first two. They chase each other in the second cartoon, which Casey said was about them getting married. Not quite; that cartoon doesn’t even exist (though it would seem logical). At least he got the third one right, about Mr and Ms. Pac Man becoming parents. Oh, my opinion of the song - not a big fan of it, but I sure played the hell out of the Pac Man Fever album back when it came out. Drove my brother and dad nuts! 8: DON’T TALK TO STRANGERS – RICK SPRINGFIELD (14) - Great song - one of R&R’s biggest songs of 1982. 7: FREEZE-FRAME – THE J. GEILS BAND (10) - OK song, but I prefer “Centerfold”. LDD: PRECIOUS TO ME – PHIL SEYMOUR - Great song! One of my favorite songs from 1981. This song is on the same Barry Scott Lost 45's CD as the Le Roux song back at #21 6: CHARIOTS OF FIRE - VANGELIS (8) - Great song! One of my favorite instrumentals of all time! 5: MAKE A MOVE ON ME – OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN (6) - Great song - one of my favorites by her. 4: THAT GIRL – STEVIE WONDER (4) - This song was holding at #1 on the soul chart for the seventh week. I liked this song. 3: WE GOT THE BEAT – THE GO-GO’S (3) - Don’t like it. My least favorite song by them. OPTIONAL EXTRA: HANG FIRE - THE ROLLING STONES - Meh, not a big fan of it. 2: OPEN ARMS - JOURNEY (2) - I used to love this song, but overplay tarnished it somewhat. 1: I LOVE ROCK N’ ROLL – JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS (1) - Classic song, although this one was overplayed as well.
Predictions for next week: I’m going to say 1984 - most likely April 7, since they’ve been doing many former AT40 Flashbacks lately. That show was one, and to my best of knowledge, it has yet to be run by AT40: The 80s. It might be quite some time before the next 1988 show, as we already heard the April 9 one on this series (and as I’ve mentioned before, they have been good about holding off on repeat shows), and April 16 was with a substitute host, so we obviously won’t hear that one. So who knows when we’ll next hear that year - most likely in late April.

AT40 The 80s April 3, 1982 Hour 2 31: TONIGHT I’M YOURS – ROD STEWART - I do not remember this song, yet it sounds quite a bit like "Young Turks". BTW the subtitle of this record reads (Don't Hurt Me). As for song, it's pretty catchy but not as good as "Young Turks". 30: DID IT IN A MINUTE – DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES - They were one of the hottest acts in the early 80s, but this song does no thing for me, so I'm going to say "no". 29: SHAKE IT UP – THE CARS - One of the most recognizable songs by this new wave band, this is one their best. 28: BABY MAKES HER BLUE JEANS TALK – DR. HOOK - This was their last top 40 hit and it peaked at #25. My favourite song by them was their last top ten hit "Sexy Eyes". Good but not my favourite. LDD: YOU NEEDED ME – ANNE MURRAY - From one of the most recognized foreign country singers in the 20th century before Shania and Keith Urban. This is Anne's only #1 pop hit. 27: ON THE WAY TO THE SKY – NEIL DIAMOND - As a rule of thumb I do not like Neil Diamond and this is a definite "no". 26: JUKE BOX HERO - FOREIGNER - Peak week for a song that hit the top 5 on the AOR charts several months prior to its "Pop" chart listing. Great song from a #1 album titled simply "4". 25: GOIN’ DOWN – GREG GUIDRY - It is noted that his death was ruled a "suicide", so I'm not sure. But if he did, I'm so disappointed because it really can't be that serious. His lone top 40 hit that's quite soulful is smoove all ghett out. It sounded like the late singer had mad talent. Say, is that his old friend Michael McDonald singing backup? 24: 867-5309/JENNY – TOMMY TUTONE - Another one hit wonder that remains a classic today! Are people still phoning this number asking for "Jenny"? 23: MY GUY – SISTER SLEDGE - My mother hated this cover and even as kid I still hear no flaws what so ever. I remember hearing this on American Bandstand on "rate the hits or whatever". The Philadelphia sisters' last top 40 is the first version of "My Girl" that I've ever heard before hearing the original months later. As a whole I prefer the original by the late Mary Well even though this is a great cover. 22: BOBBIE SUE – THE OAK RIDGE BOYS - 25 ex-members? WTF! Their 2nd and last top 40 pop hit is rather catchy, it's pretty tight. Optional Extra: GENIUS OF LOVE - TOM TOM CLUB - One of the most sampled songs in Urban music made the top 5 on the R&B charts. Just several hours ago I was jamming to "Tumblin Down" by Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers, the mix which also includes a sample of this song. As a kid I have always wanted this song on my cassette, but never attained it disappointingly.
