I was thinking about the headache you must have after getting all that straight, but that'll work too. Oh. Heh. Admittedly, that went a little over my head, but truth be told, there's been a couple other stations that have given me worse headaches trying to track down than they have. At least with WVIC, all the information is readily available and there's plenty to work with. Hopefully I can be all rested up and ready to go for next weekend. ;D

For AT40, with both Casey and Shadoe, I used WRQX in the 80s and early 90s, until they dropped it in 1991 Hmmm...just curious, do you remember about when they dropped it? Reason I ask is, they got a mention in the March 9 show.

I'm posting this here since we are having a radio station discussion. I am listening to this past weekends Rick Dees 80's show and it mentions "Y-106" in Orlando. Was this what is now XL 106.7 or the station on 105.9?

^ I looked into this, and it's 106.7, then known as WHLY. They didn't become WXXL until 1990. Google pointed me to a site that you might like: Central Florida Radio

Weird that WMMX doesn't have the list for this week's show up yet.

I think I've finally figured this one out: 11/21/87: "The Music FM" KLKT Reno, NV. Jimmy's given me the list of stations for 1/25/86 in advance, so I have a frequency - 100 on the FM. But, there was no station broadcasting close enough to there on 3/12/83, so this station must have joined after. I've stumbled upon a massive archive of old radio station yearbooks (the wonders of Google... , and found where they're listed. They were launched on June 10, 1983, thus not being listed in the '83 AT40 guide. Anyways, this was an AC station carrying the show. They were around through at least 1990, but had become KZAK, a rock station, by 1991. These days, 100.1 FM is home to KTHX, a Triple A (adult album alternative) station. Oddly enough, in 1991, KTHX was a Top 40 station in Reno at 101.7. But by at least 1999, 101.7 was a News station, so I'm thinking KZAK grabbed those letters once they'd flipped. Their current branding is "The X", so my guess is this is the branding they've had ever since doing that. What is odd is that just three months after that '87 show, 2/27/88 to be precise, The Hot FM "K-Wins" (KWNZ) was given as an affiliate. That station was a long-running CHR station in Reno, and Incline Village (KLKT's home) is in roughly the same area as Reno. So either Reno happened to be double-dipping, or KLKT was about to lose the show.

Reason I ask is, they got a mention in the March 9 show. I think it was the end of August 1991, about a year after they changed formats from the top 40 Q107 to the more Hot AC-oriented Mix 107, which it still is today.

^ Gotcha. At first I wondered if it was when the show changed charts. As for this one... 11/1/86: K-Lite 95FM Grants, NM. The 1982 and 1983 guides list a KYKN in Grants broadcasting at 95.3, so I'm thinking that was their frequency. I'm not convinced that they were still KYKN at the time of "K-Lite" branding, though. 95.3 KLLT. By 1992, there was no longer a station at 95.3 in Grants, so my guess is 1991 is the year they went out of business for good. I've found no records that say that KDRW in Silverton, CO or KLOM in Lompoc, CA, are still broadcasting, so I'm thinking those two are silent as well. Oddly enough, the KDRW tower appears to still be standing; a Google search for "KDRW 1450" or like terms reveals a lot of results for their geographic tower location.

This just in. Found a news item concerning a station previously reported on here: Whatever happened to...? (May 12, 1990) - WABB 97 FM Mobile, AL - They've been Top 40 since 1984 - also mentioned on January 23, 1988. Doesn't look like they have the current AT40 on their schedule.
Its Top 40 days appear to be coming to an end. This was posted on their website today:

Here are the stations mentioned in the first two hours of the 2/21/1987 show: - KHTR (Power 103.3), St. Louis, Missouri - this station was mentioned on the 12/4/1982 show back when they were KMOX. It's currently an oldies station; also, the letters now belong to a classic hits station in Pullman, WA
- KTAM (Classic Hits 1240), Bryan, TX - currently a Hispanic/Regional Mexican station
- KYYA (Y-93), Billings, MT - the call letters are now on the AM dial after this station went silent; it has a news/talk format.
- CFCO, Chatham Ontario, Canada - it's currently an news/sports/country radio station (it's also simulcasted on the FM dial as well). They switched to an oldies format in 1992 (Classic Gold 640) and it lasted until 3/3/2008 at 9:00 AM when they switched to country (the last oldies song played was "The Beat Goes On" and the first country song was Brooks & Dunn's "Play Something Country).
- KXN, Greenville, AL - currently an Urban Contemporary station
- WTSN (AM 1270), Dover, NH - mentioned on the 1/14/1984 and 11/21/1987 shows
- KFLY (1240), Corvallis, OR - just mentioned a couple weeks ago on the 1/31/1981 show
- WLS-AM (AM 89), Chicago - currently a news/talk station (WLS-FM was mentioned on the 2/6/1988 show).
(If you've never been there before, I recommend taking the time to read the station's Wiki entry; a really interesting read.)
Once again, someone else would have to get the rest of the stations since I only listened to the first two hours of the show (choosing to sleep in past 8 AM these days).

70s affiliate KLOU. ;D - KYYA (Y-93), Billings, MT - the call letters are now on the AM dial after this station went silent; it has a news/talk format.
93 is now KURL, a Contemporary Christian station. - WLS-AM (AM 89), Chicago - currently a news/talk station (WLS-FM was mentioned on the 2/6/1988 show).

Pete mentioned that they'd had the show since 1982. If I have my facts correct, that was the year ABC bought Watermark, thus imposing a transfer from WBBM (who were and still are owned by CBS). There must have been a shift to Z95 WYTZ (now WLS-FM) sometime later in '87, though, if they were the Chicago affiliate in a year's time. In closing, here's the YouTube link to the WLS aircheck clip from the show two weeks later (guest-hosted by Charlie Van Dyke): 3/7/87, parts of Hour 1Once again, someone else would have to get the rest of the stations since I only listened to the first two hours of the show (choosing to sleep in past 8 AM these days). Ask and ye shall receive: - KMTI Manti, UT - An affiliate since at least 12/4/82.
- KCBW Sedalia, MO - Became KSDL on August 10, 1992, which might've also been the time of flip to their current Adult Hits format.
- 1350 WBLT Bedford, VA - Now an ESPN Sports station.
- Northern New England's Hot FM Q106 Clairmont, NH - WHDQ again, still an affiliate at least nine months later (11/21).
- WQXE FM 100 Elizabethtown, KY - Still an affiliate at least as late as 5/6/89.
- All-Hit KEGL Dallas - Well now this is interesting. We just heard from them two months ago (12/13/86)! They'd still be in the family at least as late as 4/8/89.
The last one's Magic 107 KMJK Portland, OR. Like WBSB Baltimore last month, they also decided to play "musical chairs" with their call letters and formats! Get a load of this: - Barely less than two months after this show, on April 13, they flipped to Classic Hits.
- Then, on February 19, 1990, they flipped to Hot AC.
- Just a year later, on January 25, 1991, they changed calls to KMXI.
- At year's end, they flipped to Oldies on December 30.
- Then, on July 7, 1993, they flipped to Classical as KKBK.
- Only 8 months later, on March 17, 1994, they flipped to Smooth Jazz as KKJZ.
- Then, on February 4, 2002, they changed calls for the last time to KLTH, and went AC.
- Finally, on January 9, 2006, they flipped back to Oldies again, which they remain today.
All that flipping around appears to have finally paid off, as they were the top-ranked station in Portland's May 2011 Arbitron books. And, oh yes...KLTH is also a 70s affiliate today. (However, they also have a notation for not being so reliable... ) Question: Were there any new stations this week? I had to step out for a bit and missed the Hour 3 opening.

Casey has mentioned today Radio Milano International, from Italy. This station has been mentioned several times, even by Shadoe.

Well...here's the first three hours. Whatever happened to...? (February 23, 1980) - WKBO Harrisburg, PA - Only the year before, on March 28, their traffic reporter Dave Edwards noticed something unusual at a little plant called Three Mile Island. He passed along his observations to their news director Mike Pintek, who promptly called the plant and was told that there was a problem. Pintek's follow-up calls to the plant's owner developed the news story that would subsequently be picked up. So yes, WKBO were the first ones onto that story!
As for their musical leanings, they'd be passed in the ratings by early 1985, and go AC for the rest of the decade. Today, they're a Contemporary Christian station. (EDIT: OK, they were AC sooner than that. See Lousy Smarch Weather's post below.)
- WKEE Huntingdon, WV - Still an affiliate later on, on 12/4/82 and 1/14/84. (And back on 2/10/79 too - thanks again go to LSM)
- WKNR Battle Creek, MI - We just heard them two weeks ago, on 2/10/79.
- KLOM Lompoc, CA - Heard many years ago (OK, it was 11/11/72) - I believe they are silent today.
- KLWW Cedar Rapids, IA - Now KMRY, playing MOR/Oldies. In September 2002, they (as KLWW) were inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
- WLOW Aiken, SC - They'd be WPBM later this year. Now, they're WKSP, an Urban AC station.
- WMFC Monroeville, AL - I think they were broadcasting as an AM/FM combo by this point, but they wouldn't have the show for much longer - they're not in the 1981 listening guide. The two were broadcasting Oldies most recently - the FM still is, but the AM went silent on October 12, 2010.
- WDRQ Detroit, MI - Still an affiliate a year later (almost two), on 11/28/81.
- KMTI Manti, UT - Well, we just heard them last week, and like WKEE, also on 12/4/82 and 1/14/84.
Last one's KNVR Paradise, CA. It's list time again! - In 1992 they changed to KZZP.
- In 1995 they changed to KZAP.
- In 2000 they flipped formats to AC.
- In 2002 they flipped formats to Rhythmic.
- On June 18, 2007, they flipped formats to Triple A.
- Not successful with that, they flipped formats on May 10, 2010 to News/Talk.
- Finally, just last March they flipped to Classic Hits.
And that's it for this week.

The stations mentioned in the first two hours of the 2/23/1980 show are: - WKBO, Harrisburg, PA - currently a Contemporary Christian station. They stopped being a Top 40 station six months after this show aired according to the station's tribute site.
Interesting fact about WKBO: They had the distinction of being the first media outlet to report on the incident at Three Mile Island (from Wikipedia):
- WKEE, Huntington, WV - mentioned on the 2/10/1979, 12/4/1982 and 1/14/1984 shows; I have a feeling we'll be hearing this one mentioned quite a bit this coming year.
- WKNR, Battle Creek, MI - also mentioned on the 2/10/1979 show
- KLOM, Lompoc, CA - mentioned on the 11/11/1972 show. Mike posted a week ago that he couldn't find a record of this station and figured that they're a station gone silent.
- KLWW, Cedar Rapids, IA - now KMRY, a MOR/Oldies station (their slogan is "Timeless Classics For Grown-Ups of All Ages"). According to their page on the website for the Iowa Rock n Roll Music Association, they changed their call letters to KCDR in 1980 and became a country format then adult standards, changing the call letters to KMRY on 11/21/1988.
