Raleigh's G105 has been the Deep South's most prestigious CHR (Contemporary Hit Radio) powerhouse for over three decades since Q105/Tampa, whose most famous alum was Scott Shannon, switched to country in 1993.
Ms. Randi West has not only been the PD at G105 for at least a decade on top of her duties as the PM drive air personality, but she also voicetracks airshifts at nine other Clear Channel top 40 stations, or some 120+ fewer than that dude named Seacrest!!!!!
KOIL/Omaha's most famous alum was the one and only radio legend known as 'The Real Don Steele', who was the afternoon drive DJ at 93/KHJ Los Angeles, which changed the presentation of top 40 radio forever when it was launched in May of 1965, and shot to #1 in less than three months.
Under the guidance of owner Bill Drake of Drake-Chennault Broadcasting and PD Ron Jacobs, KHJ's success spawned the launching of a slew of identicallly structured top 40 powerhouses from coast to coast; Charlie Van Dyke worked at several of them and dominated the ratings in more major markets than any other DJ of the past 40 years!!!!, in cities such as Chicago, Boston, Detroit, NYC, San Francisco, and even WHBQ/Memphis, where Rick Dees became a star in the early seventies as the 'Mouth Of The South'.
Within three months KHJ blew two top 40 powerhouses off the dial, one of which was KRLA/Pasadena, where Casey Kasem was doing the noon-3 shift until he left in 1969, a year before he started AT40, with future 'Wheel Of Fortune' announcer Charlie O'Donnell doing the 9AM-noon shift, and future 'The Newlywed Game' host Bob Eubanks doing the 3PM-6PM shift.

at40freak: WVIC must've swapped out AT40 in favor of Rick's show - I'm listening to 8/20/88 on his site, and he just talked to a Countdown Challenge winner that said he listens to the show on WVIC. If I had to guess, I'd say the switch must've happened sometime not long before that 11/21/87 AT40. Some stations carried both though.

AFRTS Rota Navy Station / Airbase, Rota, Cádiz, Spain.
Then AFRTS and now AFN Rota, taking AT40 Ryan as part of AFN The Eagle.
One of the AFRTS outlet and one of the Great Radio Stations taking AT40 and Rick Dees WT40 when no AT40.

Whatever happened to...? (November 28, 1981) - KCBS (FM) San Francisco, Dave Roberts's station: They were actually about to leave the American Top 40 family. In January 1982, they became KRQR, with a hard AOR format. Despite San Fran having no less than four such stations within the next year, KRQR would prove to be the dominant one for many years. Finally in 1995, with AOR on the whole having been in decline, they became KLLC, which they are now. KLLC runs an "Alice"-styled Adult Top 40 format.
- KRLY Houston - Now KKRW, a Classic Rocker.
- WGCL Cleveland - They faced stiff ratings competition throughout pretty much their whole run as a Top 40 station from Cleveland's Rock station, WMMS (which is still that way today). The new year would provide a boon for WGCL, as 1982 would be the year where they beat their rival in the ratings. However, WMMS would be re-tooled, and take the crown back. WGCL would be sold in October 1986, and their new format, a mixed Rock/Top 40 format, would begin on the 22nd. In the last few days before that, though, one of the earliest examples of station "stunting" would take place, with 72 hours of non-stop Beatles records. This format would only last a few months, as Metropolis Broadcasting would sell the station off again enroute to going out of business completely. Over the next few years, the station, which had been renamed WNCX, would evolve into a Classic Rock format, which they remain today.
- WDRQ Detroit - They would go Urban next year, and stayed with that until 4/15/85. A series of format changes later, including another go at Top 40, and on April Fool's Day 2005, they abruptly became "Doug FM". No Foolies!
- KIMN (AM) Denver - On April 26, 1988, they flipped to Country. Now as KRWZ, they're an Oldies station, which they've been since September 2, 2008.
- KSLQ St. Louis - On this date, they operated at 98.1. On October 1, 1982, they swapped frequencies with KYKY (then AC), which had been at 104.5. Today, the current home of KSLQ operates as a Hot AC, while oddly enough, the current KYKY operates as a similar Adult Top 40.
- KJR Seattle - On this date, there was both an AM and an FM station broadcasting the same thing. The AM station is now a Fox Sports station, which FM KNBQ began simulcasting three weeks ago. As for the FM, 70s listeners should recognize this one, as they sadly dropped the show back in July.
- WIKS Indianapolis - They became WZPL in April 1983. They played Classic Rock for a time in 1989. Theirs is more of an "Adult" format, but is otherwise more-or-less the same format they were back in '81. Although...they do run the current AT40, but I wonder if it's the Hot AC version.
- KAFM Dallas - According to a database of Dallas radio (which I will get to in a moment), this was apparently an "adult" rock and jazz station at this time - one that apparently still carried the show! (The 1981 listening guide, available on Charis, also lists this station.) In 1982, they flipped to "Pop Oldies" and stayed with it through August, when they then went Top 40. On February 20, 1986, their call letters became KZPS (which they still are now). Wiki states that they were sold in the summer of '86, though the Dallas website doesn't corroborate this. Either way, that December, they became a mix of Classic Hits and Jazz. In 1988, they dropped the Jazz. In 1990, they became a Texas-themed Classic Rocker, which they've been ever since.
In researching the Dallas station, I stumbled across this website, which has a very thorough history of Dallas radio, both AM and FM. It apparently hasn't been updated since 2004, but for the sheer amount of history already there, I strongly recommend for anyone interested! Site: Mike Shannon's Tribute to DFW Radio and TVAnd...that's all of 'em, folks!

While yes the current station here in St. Louis at 104.5 (Actually its more of a rim shot station) is called KSLQ. It really has nothing to do with the former KSLQ now called Y98 as its always been owned by CBS. The current KSLQ has always been owned by a independent operator.

I am posting strictly on memory but I was in St. Louis from 77 to 82 in college and I remember KSLQ being around 98 on the dial then.

Later they would also air CT40, and at the time of the flip they both aired on Sundays with CT40 airing Sunday mornings and WT40 airing Sunday nights.

Do you know of any examples of stations that carried both at once? I still don't think WVIC ever did, given these two timing instances, but nobody's ever talked about stations having both on the schedule back in the day (even though there's a couple, such as KZOY, that have classic airings of both), so I'm curious as to who might've taken that chance.

Whatever happened to...? (November 21, 1987) - KHIT - I'll have to listen for Casey's ID again. I've found lots of stations that had this ID previously, both AM and FM, but haven't been able to connect a single lead to a Seattle station.
More info on KHIT. It was an AM station in Walla Walla, Washington when new owners acquired KWWA, Bremerton, and were turning it into a regional Seattle area station in 1984. They paid the Walla Walla station to drop the KHIT calls so they could use them. KHIT-Bremerton never carried American Top 40 as far as I know; it's always been KJR and KUBE. Also, KJR-FM has been deemphasizing their calls lately. There's been speculation that the FM station simulcasting KJR-AM will pick up the calls, and the current KJR-FM will be called something else. Before AT40-70s was on KJR-FM it was on KBSG. I always wondered what would happen if Casey mentioned a station that used to carry AT40 but which is currently on the air as a competitor to the station currently carrying an old AT40 show.

Oh, and the Walla Walla KHIT became KGDC as far as I can tell. The FCC database only goes back as far as July 4, 1984, showing a call sign change on the same day as the KHIT-Bremerton debut. KGDC is listed as news-talk.

- KMLB Monroe, LA
- WENS Indianapolis
- WKEE Huntingdon, WV
- WMRF Lewiston, PA
- KMOX St. Louis, MO
- WLCC Loray, VA
- KMTI Mantai, UT
New to the American Top 40 family: - KBRW Silverton, CO

WENS eventually carried CT40 for a while and even AT20 HAC for a time. They changed formats and calls in the 2000s to Hank FM WLHK, "anything" country.

What I came up with: - WMRF Lewiston, PA - now a Hot AC station
- WKEE Huntingdon, WV - currently a Top 40 station and still airs AT40 to this day
- WLCC Loray, VA - currently a "regional Mexican" station in Tampa Bay, FL
- KMTI Mantai, UT - currently a country station
- KBRW Silverton, CO - now has a public radio format in Barrow, Alaska (both AM and FM)
- WJTH Calhoun, GA - currently a country format
- WKCX Rome, GA - the call letters now belong to a station in Crittenden, Kentucky; they became a ClassX Radio Network affiliate earlier this year.
--- *KJRB Spokane, WA - now a news/talk station. From their Wikipedia page: *WKDK Newberry, SC - currently a "variety hits" station. From their website: *KMLB Monroe, LA - This one is kind of hard for me to pin down, so I'll just post the following links so someone else can take this over if they desire: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KMLBen.wikipedia.org/wiki/KNOE-FMAs for KMOX, I think their Wikipedia entry might speak for itself: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KMOX

WENS eventually carried CT40 for a while and even AT20 HAC for a time. They changed formats and calls in the 2000s to Hank FM WLHK, "anything" country. I will add: Indianapolis lawyer Jeff Simulyan and two partners formed Emmis Communications (yep, the ones responsible for L.A.'s Power 106 in a little over 3 years!), and an often-used slogan for WENS was that they were Emmis's flagship station. Incidentally, 80s affiliate WYXB is a sister to WLHK. What I came up with: - WMRF Lewiston, PA - now a Hot AC station
Another AM/FM simulcast, this time 1490 AM and 95.9 FM. The FM has moved a bit to 95.7, but yes, they're Hot AC. Despite Wiki listing no less than seven AM 1490 stations in Pennsylvania, and four other AM stations in Lewistown, I can't find a record of the 1982 AM station anywhere. - WKEE Huntingdon, WV - currently a Top 40 station and still airs AT40 to this day
Yep! What's notable about that is, it appears that they haven't changed formats since '82. This was also a simulcast, and the AM station is now a conservative talk station - technically no official affiliation, but you can find Glenn, Rush, and Sean on there. No idea when the AM/FM simulcast ended, though. - WLCC Loray, VA - currently a "regional Mexican" station in Tampa Bay, FL
Slight correction to my own posting. It's Luray, not Loray. Actually, here's an example of where the show must've had inaccurate data. The listening guide lists the original WLCC at 106.3, but Wiki states that they were at 105.7 from 1979 to 1998. They still are, but they're not WLCC anymore. They're now WMXH, and play Adult Standards. WLCC was one of those AC stations carrying the show. - KMTI Mantai, UT - currently a country station
Manti, actually (not a good week for me to guess spellings), but yes. - KBRW Silverton, CO - now has a public radio format in Barrow, Alaska (both AM and FM)
The 1983 listening guide lists KDRW rather than KBRW. Wow, that's my third error this week. I can't find a record of the previous KDRW anywhere. - WJTH Calhoun, GA - currently a country format
'Nuff said. - WKCX Rome, GA - the call letters now belong to a station in Crittenden, Kentucky; they became a ClassX Radio Network affiliate earlier this year.
The station that had these letters in '82 is now WGPB, part of the Georgia Public Broadcasting network. They had most recently previously been a Hot AC station, until the GPB deal was made in 2006, and the station as it is now launched on June 30 of that year. *KJRB Spokane, WA - now a news/talk station. From their Wikipedia page: Reading this, I can't help but think: How does an Oldies station still carry a present-day show like AT40? Unless that didn't happen till after this show. *WKDK Newberry, SC - currently a "variety hits" station. From their website: 'Nuff said. *KMLB Monroe, LA - This one is kind of hard for me to pin down, so I'll just post the following links so someone else can take this over if they desire: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KMLBen.wikipedia.org/wiki/KNOE-FM[/qupte]You won't get anything better than those two Wiki links, but I'll sum it up: This station originally broadcast at 1440, and was a sister station to KNOE. In 2008, the two were sold by their previous owner, former Louisiana governor James A. Noe. KNOE is currently a Pop station, while KMLB now broadcasts at 540. There is no station currently broadcasting at 1440 - the sale resulted in that frequency closing down with its license being cancelled. KMLB these days is a conservative talk station (though they don't have any official affiliations with anyone like Fox News). She's not kidding, folks. G'on an' read it.
