He was primarily a country artist and was best known for his song "Skip a Rope", which was recorded in 1967 and his only Hot 100 hit (#25) the following year.
Cargill was 66.

Man that's horrible to hear this news. I loved Cargill's music. I just recently found a copy of his last charted country hit "Have A Good Day"
Back in 1980 when I was flirting with collecting country singles, I was always intrigued by the little indy labels that made the top 40, and no local record store would carry. I decided I would write the label for copies and see what would happen. There were three I was trying for, and received two. The first of them was "Silence On The Line" by Henson Cargill it was on a label called Copper Mountain (as well as the follow up listed above). I received the record almost instantly with a nice letter from Henson Cargill's brother, thanking me for writing and apologizing for not being able to find it. (by the way the second to arrive was "Big Man's Cafe" by Nick Noble on the Churchill label.
The one that didn't, by the way was "My Home's In Alabama" by Alabama on MDJ ( I had to get it from a co worker who took a vacation to Detroit.
RIP Henson, you were one of the best!!!
