As well all know, Casey sometimes had special countdowns for Thanksgiving weekend. Well, since we don't get that any more, I went ahead and made a special countdown chart for fun. Below is the top 40 songs of the 2000s so far on the Hot AC chart, based on the Radio and Records/Mediabase 24/7 HAC chart and an inverse point system:

How did Blvd of Broken Dreams which was #1 for 2005 wind up lower than other songs in that year?

The other 2005 songs that ranked higher had more weeks on the chart and thus earned more points using my point system. A good example is "Collide", which only peaked at #7, but spent over a year on the chart.

Yep.

Actually, I've heard of all of the artists. . .but I can't say that I liked more than about 6 of those songs.

One day, I'll do a rigorous research project that proves, scientifically, that music really is inferior nowadays, and that we're not just "getting old" and acting like our parents did 20 years ago ;D

I'll be interested in your study if and when you conduct it. Although I know nothing about music research, I'm not sure how you can objectify music superiority/inferiority.

Not sure that I can either. My comment was just a rhetorical device to bemoan the fact that I probably am getting older. Having said that, though, with all of the interesting new research on the neurological basis of music appreciation, I would bet that some clever researcher will try to do exactly what I proposed.

Unwritten is at... what... 21 weeks at #1? 22? Amazing. And "Bad Day" dominated all fall.

Despite music these days being what it is, I really like both of those songs.

While I am getting old, I have young kids who have exposed me to this music...and I think it is pretty good. I think the problem is that much of it has "Seasons in the Sun" disease...as these songs are played over and over and over again on the Listen at work, soft rock, love songs stations...and I would take nearly all of these songs over the "Seasons in the Sun" by the way!

The real problem is that the playlists are so darn short for these stations, there is a lot of other music out there that these stations could play, but their bogus research tells them to stick to small unimaginative playlists.
