Maynard Ferguson, renowned jazz trumpeter died earlier today. He was probably best known for screaching high notes that were the envy of brass players young and old everywhere.
In 1977, he hit #28 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his version of "Gonna Fly Now."
Back in the 1950's he was a member of Stan Kenton's Band.
In the 1970's, he fused pop and jazz music into his own style. Some of the music he is best known for is "La Fiesta", "Gabriel", "Star Trek", and, still played by marching and athletic bands around the country today, "Chameleon!"
Ferguson recorded over 70 albums!
I remember watching him in concert back in 1993. Even then he could still hit the double-high-D's! You could see the imprint on his lips for buzzing so high and long by the end of the concert! He and his band received a standing ovation during the playing of the finale, "Hey Jude!"
