"Here we go with the top forty hits in the nation this week on American Top 40. The best selling and most played songs from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Canada to Mexico. This is Casey Kasem in Hollywood, and in the next 3 hours we'll count down the forty most popular hits in the United States this week, hot off the record charts of Billboard magazine for the week ending July 11th, 1970." To paraphrase The Beatles, "It was 35 years ago today..." And so began the most popular, celebrated and respected program in the history of radio, with the very first Number 40 song, "End of Our Road" by Marvin Gaye. From the very first human interest story, about Mark Lindsay's $10,000 gold-plated hubcaps, to Casey uttering for the first of thousands of times, "On with the countdown!", to Elvis and The Beatles at back-to-back positions in the Top 10, to the very first Number One hit, "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" by Three Dog Night. If you remain an AT40 listener, or if you've moved on to the AC or Hot AC versions, take a minute to say thanks to Casey, Don, TR and Ron for giving birth to The Mothership and for sticking with it when the show was in the red those first few years. And thanks to Shadoe, Ryan, all the guest hosts (good and bad), all the wonderfully talented people behind the scenes (especially the writers), and all the fans like you and me that live and breathe for this stuff. Happy 35th Anniversary to both American Top 40 and Casey Kasem. And the countdown continues...

Happy Anniversary, indeed...to the king of the countdowns, Casey Kasem...and to all involved with the production of AT40 over the years!!
I'm celebrating today with the 7/4/87 special, "Top 40 hits of the 80s so far." What's interesting about this show, that I'd never stopped to think about before, is that Casey plays sound bite actualities from interviews with some of the artists. I don't remember Casey ever doing this on any show. Are there other occurences of this that anyone knows of?

Yes, Happy Anniversary to AT40! I listened to the All American Special from 7/4/91 to celebrate. By the way, I've updated my old AT40 anniversary site to include info through 2005. If you're interested, the site is: www.geocities.com/beanerbaby05/at40/index.html

Yes, Happy Anniversary to AT40! I listened to the All American Special from 7/4/91 to celebrate. I'm listening to that one right now myself, and it's the first time I've heard it. I'm up to Tina Turner at #21.

In case anyone's interested, I've added pictures of the AT40 Cookie Jar to my AT40 fan page. These cookie jars were given out when Casey returned to AT40 in 1998. calbean.users3.50megs.com/at40/atpics.htmlThe cookie jar pictures are near the bottom of the page. (I apologize for the ads on the page. If I had lots of $$ I would buy my own domain without ads. )

I too own one of the AM/FM issued AT40 Cookie Jars. They really are a nice item to have. I display mine on a shelf with all of my radio memorabilia.

I had never heard of them until I saw the pic on Ev's site. Where did you all get them(the cookie jar, not the pics) from?

I don't actually have one. I tried to get one off ebay, but was sniped at the last second. The pictures are from that ebay auction.

Hahaha, no...but I did get mine from E-Bay. I got mine a while back, and I know the pictures on the auction of mine were much different than those on Ev's website.
