From October-December of last year, on the "This Day In AT40/AT20/AT10 history page, it was mentioned that it was weeks of hell when "You Light Up My Life" by Debby Boone spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on AT40 in 1977. Well, I do have to agree with you that "Light" is a very depressing song, but the last 30 seconds of that song is very touching. For example, last night, I had a dream that I was helping my mom do something with her, and after the dream was over, the last 30 seconds of "Light" came into my head, and it was playing non-stop in my head for about 10 minutes, and I started crying all of a sudden. It took me nearly a half-hour to go back to sleep. The next time you hear the last 30 seconds of "You Light Up My Life", try to feel the song without crying.

Here's some AT40 trivia........did you know that the song "You Light Up My Life" was played in a 1973 AT40 program? I'll give someone else the opportunity to provide details, unless I've stumped everyone!

It was the B-side of her then-current hit single, and is not the same song as the Debby Boone hit. Hey, Pete...do I win an autographed copy of your book? ;D

A confession, when I was in radio...I HATED the song. At one of the stations I worked at, a dj at the AM sister station came by and picked up my cart one day that had the Myrtle Beach weather forecast recorded on it. In retrospect, I should have been suspcious that he wanted to go record my forecast as he was always pulling pranks on me. What I should have been paying attention to was the fact he took a 70 second cart and returned with a 6 1/2 minute cart. I hit the Myrtle Beach weather and when the weather guy was giving his outcue, the intro of "You Light Up My Life" started, I had no other option but let the tune play. Those were the days my friend...

Kentd....loved your story....... But more importantly --- ding ding ding --- we have a winner! Liberaljag is right about Carole King's version of a completely different "You Light Up My Life." It was heard on the September 1, 1973 AT40 program, as the flipside to "Corazon." Uh, a prize? Sure, liberaljag, but I'll meet you halfway -- you get the autograph!

Back in those days, we had a format to follow, but had a little bit of freedom in what we could play. You had certain songs that were on a 3-4 hour rotation, certain on a 5-6 hour rotation, and "droppers" that may be on a 8-10 hour rotation, then you had your oldies. At my first station you pulled all of your own oldies. At the larger FM I was at, we had an "Oldies Director" who pulled all oldies and you played from those. I spent about 6 of my last months in 1982 as Oldies Director. Another tune I HATED was Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell", which I thought would be cute to "break" the record on the air. I grabbed a PSA record from the trash and told on the air that I was going to break "Ring My Bell". When I went to break it the darn thing it just bended...and continued to bend. No sound. So I took the phone receiver and beat the record, which failed to sound like anything coherent was remotely going on. Live radio.

It's an invaluable part of my collection. I use it to jog my memory when I'm trying to decide which AT40 shows to buy. Sometimes I'll remember hearing a story on AT40 as a child, just by reading the description in your book.

As noted in another thread, and thanks to the sharp memory of liberaljag, Carole King's "You Light Up My Life" was the "B" side to "Believe In Humanity," not "Corazon." My mistake!!
