Since July 4th, Casey Kasem is no longer heard on Detroit radio. Both of his countdown shows AT20 and AT10 are not played in Detroit. WNIC was the last station in Detroit to carry Casey with the American Top 10 show. However, WNIC has decided to drop Casey and air "Flashback Weekends" music throughout the whole weekend. WNIC still will air the national sponsors from AT10, but not the show itself. It's a shame! Casey Kasem's hometown is Detroit and his countdown shows are off the air in Motown. I fear this is the beginning of the end of Casey Kasem on radio. You better enjoy listening to him now, before he is gone forever. Besides Detroit, Casey Kasem does not air in the New York City, and St. Paul/Minneapolis markets. Thats 3 big city major markets without Casey. Eventually, more big markets will drop Casey just leaving a handful of small market stations. It sounds like the same pattern AT40 with Shadoe Stvevens went off the air. I don't want to sound gloom, but I have my fears. At least with the internet for now, I still can listen to Casey.

It has come to my attention WNIC did not cancel Casey, but put Casey on Summer hiatus. Casey would return WNIC the weekend after Labor Day.
I don't believe that at all. Watch, WNIC in the fall will say, the flashback weekends did so well, we will continure that forever.
I'm going to send an email to Casey's staff. I'm sure they'll be happy about that (not!)

WTIC in Hartford, CT has "flashback weekends" as well, and yet they still air AT20 every Sunday morning.
I don't see why it would kill that Detroit station to break from their weekend format for 3 hours to air Casey, but what do I know?

I don't see why it would kill that Detroit station to break from their weekend format for 3 hours to air Casey, but what do I know? Every weekend Sunny 101.5 (WNSN in South Bend) does "Totally 80s weekends" except around the holidays, when they do "Totally Christmas weekends" and even then, they take a break from those to run their regular 80s programs. I first noticed this when they ran AT40 Flashback during the holidays. Now, since this was in 2002, when it had been announced that the Flashback show was going to be cancelled at the end of the year, I figured that was why, but last Christmas, I noticed that they still aired "The Amazing 80s", a show that's still around. So, yeah, there's no reason that they can't just break for three hours to run AT10. You said that they air the national sponsors. Does this mean that they do the commercials but not the show itself? If so, that's two stupid moves on their part. What, are they going to melt if they play three less hours of 80s music over the weekend?

Yes, WNIC only airs the the national commericals from AT10. So, when I turn on WNIC at 9 a.m. Sunday morning after church, I would hear the American Egg Board, GM/Onstar, Oscar Mayer, Nat'l Association of Realtors, Tom Selleck Go RV, ads. etc. Then I hear the WNIC jingle, then its just several songs from the 70s or 80s.
Even more amazing, a WNIC dj on tape will say, "AT10 is brought to you locally by........" but AT10 wil not air at all.
WNIC is a clear channel station. They are the kind of station that would start playing all Christmas music beginning November 1st. In 2003, I believe they started playing the Christmas songs on November 10th.

If a station has the show they might as well just air the d**n thing. WTMX in Chicago did the exact same thing. I listened to the station for a few weeks to see if they'd decided to start running the show again, but they never did. Soon after, I totally boycotted the station. I even replaced the preset on my car radio to a classical music station!

Well I was right, sort of. WNIC decided to keep the flashback weekend for the fall. Casey will return to WNIC on September 12th. However, it will air at a crummy time slot. Now Casey and AT10 will air 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday morning. After 9 a.m. its back to flashback weekends. WNIC is just as bad as WLXT in northern Michigan. WLXT also airs AT10 during the same bad time slot. But as I posted before, I now listen to Casey on WRVF 101.5 Saturdays at 7 a.m. I will listern to Casey on WRVF instead of WNIC.

So, is it true that American Top 10 will return this weekend, but it will air from 6 am to 9 am on Sunday mornings. I am going to have to call WNIC myself, and/or e-mail them one or the other. What is WRVF's website?

WNIC listeners LOVE THEIR GOLD!!! The ideal is to do it as a special feature like on the weekends or a daypart. Weekends do burn out but not as quick as a 24 hour format.
