I was wondering, did Casey Kasem ever play the 1981 studio version of "Mony Mony" by Billy Idol during its run on the AT40 chart in 1987? Of the few Flashback shows with the song on the chart that I've heard, he played the live version. I could have sworn I heard the original version a time or two on AT40.

As far as I can remember, they mostly played the live version of "Mony Mony". I don't think they ever played the studio version. It's hard to remember, it's been almost 18 years since that song charted. By the way, I like the live version better.

I listened to AT40 religiously in late 1987, and I don't remember them ever playing the studio version of "Mony Mony" (other than maybe a drop-piece). My memory isn't failsafe, though, so I could be wrong.

If my memory still serves me well (I am still not that old... but well time flies ), I think they just played a piece of an original as a teaser - once.

OK. I wasn't sure. Many is the time that, when a live version of a song hit the chart, they played the original version once during its chart run (like "Candle In The Wind" by Elton John - on January 30, they played the original version from "Goodbye Yellowbrick Road" and I remember once, on Casey's Countdown, they played the original version of "Silver Springs" by Fleetwood Mac). I guess this was one of the exceptions.

I always thought the studio version of "Mony Mony" was alot better than the Live version. And I can tell you that as a Mobile DJ,I have NEVER played the Live version in the 13 years or so that I have done this. And nobody asks for the Live version either. I'm glad that Idol got a #1 out of the song, but I think most people will tell you they prefer the studio version.

The only time I even heard the live single version was on the national countdown shows. All the radio stations I listened to at the time played the 1981 version (which appeared on his 1987 Vital Idol LP).

The studio version was a big underground hit in the bars/clubs for years before the "Live" version was shipped to radio to make it a hit, kinda like the "Grease Megamix". The record company was looking for a way to make a quick buck.
This has to be one of the most banned songs by schools in recent memory.

This has to be one of the most banned songs by schools in recent memory. I know. Who started that "Hey MF..." chant during the verses of that song, anyway?

The studio version played as an extra on American Top 20 this past weekend.
