I know that most of you no longer read the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Well, I am one of the few of us that do. I saw this week's Hot 100 earlier this week, and I noticed very interesting. This week "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne is the No. 1 song on the Hot 100, and there are also 4 Former No. 1 hits in the Top 10. Those former No. 1's are:
Give It To Me---Timbaland with Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake
Glamorous---Fergie featuring Ludacris
This Is Why I'm Hot---Mimms
Don't Matter---Akon
I don't ever remember a time that there have been 4 Former No. 1 hits in the Top 10 in the same week. So, I looked at my Billboard's Top 10 Charts book to see if this has happened before, and as it turns out, it has happened before. This occurrence happened back in 1975. Back on the week of September 6, 1975, the song "Rhinestome Cowboy" by Glen Campbell was the No. 1 on the Hot 100, and here were the 4 former No. 1 hits that were in the Top 10 that week:
One Of These Nights---The Eagles
Jive Talkin'---The Bee Gees
Fallin' In Love---Hamilton, Joe Frank, and Reynolds
Get Down Tonight---KC and The Sunshine Band

Yeah, it's an unusual occurrence. Back in the pre-Soundscan/BDS days, singles would more or less drop like a rock after hitting #1, making it unusual to have more than one or two former #1 songs in the Top Ten simultaneously. After November 1991, that changed dramatically, with singles taking their sweet time sliding downward. But that was offset by songs spending longer at the top, so it was still rare for more than one former #1 to hang out in the Top Ten.
Fast forward to this year, when digital downloads have turned #1 into a revolving door once again, and the conditions were right for a glut of #1s in the Top Ten at the same time.

^How about the week of November 19, 1966. This was the first time in the history of the Hot 100 that the entire Top Five was filled by songs that either had been or would be #1:
1) You Keep Me Hangin' On/The Supremes 2) Good Vibrations/The Beach Boys 3) Winchester Cathedral/New Vaudeville Band 4) Last Train To Clarksville/The Monkees 5) Poor Side Of Town/Johnny Rivers
