Apparently Microsoft is moving away from DirectSound which means there will likely be problems using legacy multimedia/audio software. What I am most concerned about is recording streams using Total Recorder. For those who have upgraded to Vista, does Total Recorder work? If not, are there any alternative solutions? Thanks.

I am not really sure whether this will be a "correct" answer to this question, but consider it a qulified hint: I think it should be adviseable to run "Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor" and check the compatibility issues with your installed hardware and software. www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/upgradeadvisor/This should give you a clue. Is Total Recorder site stating anything? They should be aware of this "problem"...

Shawn: I think the answer to some of your questions can be found here www.totalrecorder.com/TR_and_Vista.htm Just got Vista myself with my new laptop-no problems using Advanced Sound Recorder with it. But I understand that you like to schedule your taping so ASR may not be for you. I got the shows broadcast last week so email me if interested. John

I just decided to scrap Vista altogether and re-install XP on the new laptop... Total recorder again works great and I can schedule many more shows to record at once.
But yeah, it was crazyness.

I should be back there by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Had to do some maintenance on the computer that had my AIM and am now installing XP Home there.

John Hi John, Speaking of AIM, I haven't been able to get it to work on one of my computers for several months now...and AOL is taking forever to load whenever I log in...I don't have this problem on any other computer. I've reinstalled both AOL and AIM several times, but I still can't get AIM to work of AOL to function smoothly. I would really appreciate any suggestions from you or anyone else. Thanks, much.

Steve:
I'd just download AIM-AOL is not required unless that's your ISP and based upon emails we have exchanged AOL is not your ISP. What version of Windows are you using? The computer that I have AIM on uses XP, the one with Vista will not have AIM.
Go to the site where AIM is downloaded and you will probably be able to find some FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) that may be able to resolve the problems you are having with AIM. Please feel free to email me here or the address you have for me and tell me more about your system and I'll try to help more.
John

I just bought a new computer with vista and total recordwer will not work for me. I get a message that says recording in software mode is not possible because of certain qualities in your sound board or the software you have uinstalled for the sound board. I clicked on the link in the above post and it says the compatibility issues have been resolved. Wrong!!!!!

We justpurchased a laptop with windows vista also and having similar problems. I was able torecord in soundboard mode( after reading the TR FAQ, although my computer sound card must not have any of that loop-line stuff), but the audio playback was really low and barely audiable. For you more computer savy posters out there I was wondering if I purchased an external sound card (USB port) would that improve the recording and the playback of the stream. thanks!

I just downloaded total recorder version 7.0 and it does work with vista. If you have version 6.1 it will delete that version and replace it with the new one.
