I long ago accepted that the AC format is no longer the "soft rock" format it was for several decades. For a while it was somewhat jarring to hear songs like You Give Love A Bad Name and Pour Some Sugar On Me on stations that used to appeal to people who hated that kind of music. But this week, I got a new surprise.
The other morning, my local AC station played No Diggity during the morning show. Not only that, it was the full version featuring Dr. Dre. Is this where we're at now? Will AC stations of the near future be playing Eminem and Snoop Dogg?
Or am I just turning into a cranky old man? I'm too young for that!

We always need new recruits. Snoop apparently is now totally normalized so before long he will be considered too corny. Time marches on. I don't think there are any stations even playing 1970s music where I live anymore.

Time marches on. I don't think there are any stations even playing 1970s music where I live anymore. Interesting that you would say this. The very same station I mentioned earlier actually put 70s music back into the rotation within the past two years. Even occasional early 70s songs like Rocket Man. Meanwhile, they only add one or two "new" songs every few months. I took this as a sign that there are so few "acceptable" radio songs from the past few decades that this is the only way to keep the playlist big enough. Which makes me wonder what will happen in another 20 years.

Remember when former NYC Hot AC station WPLJ in 1992-1994 aired Shadoe Stevens American Top 40 that the rap (and R&B and dance) songs were mentioned by Shadoe but not played?

Now we have a whole generation or more of people who grew up with rap and hip-hop who have "aged into" the AC demographic, though many of them still listen to CHR, R&B, rock/alt, etc. stations as well. So it's not too hard to see why it gets play there as well as at Classic Hits.
