Bassist Brian Keith "Herbie" Flowers passed away on September 5 at the age of 86. No cause of death was given. Herbie was a member of Blue Mink and T Rex for a time, but was best known as a session player. He appeared on David Bowie's "Space Oddity" and "Diamond Dogs" albums as well as recordings by Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Elton John and Cat Stevens among many others. His best known work is the oft-sampled double bass line he performed on Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side". Some of his other iconic bass lines can be heard on David Essex's "Rock On" and Nilsson's "Jump Into The Fire". During the 70s, it was estimated that Herbie played on about 500 recordings. Obituary
