Just curious...after listening to some of the 1970's AT40's I realized how HUGE disco actually was.
Does anyone think that Hip Hop/Rap will go the way of disco-as a phase and then eventually not have its realm on the charts. If so, what do you suppose the new fad will be?

One big difference: Disco had a chart shelf life of about 6 years. Rap/Hip-hop can trace its beginnings back to the late '70's, and has been dominating the charts (well, Billboard's, anyway) since the mid-90's.

Good point. I thought about that. Also, hip/hop has its roots in a cultural foundation while disco was a fad that was just "out there" without any real ground.
I think that the methodology of tracking music popularity that started in the early 90's also has helped rap/hip hop tremendously.

If you want to get technical, "Disco" really never went away completely (although the name did)... the Dance music popular from the '80s through today evolved at least partially from the disco music that dominated in the '70s.

True enough. And you can trace the first inklings of what became "Disco" to the very early '70's Soul hits like "Shaft" and others. And you can certainly hear some Disco influences in Techno bands like New Order or Depeche Mode. So the influence, at least has been and continues to be there on the charts.
