On the AT40: The 70's 3/10/1979 show Casey told the story about Frank Mills' "Music Box Dancer" that it was first done in 1974 but not released as a single until 1978-1979 and how it first got airplay after being sent to a Canadian rock station by accident.
Was "Music Box Dancer" pre AT40 charting popular in Canadian and some USA BEAUTIFUL MUSIC radio stations in the 1974-1979 time and beyond? BEAUTIFUL MUSIC radio stations as I know was nothing but instrumental elevator musak! The BEAUTIFUL MUSIC radio stations were phased out by the end of the 1980's/start of the 1990's.

I see no listing for Music Box Dancer in either Billboard (Easy Listening chart) or Radio & Records (Pop/Adult chart) in 1974--although the instrumental did reach #1 in R & R (P/A chart) in March 1979, and #4 on the A/C survey in Billboard.
