I'd say the majority are deserving, though I'm rather surprised Eric B & Rakim are being considered. Granted, I'm not into rap, but I've followed popular music since the early 1980s and I barely ever remember hearing much about them.

There's a change at the top of the leaderboard as Dave Matthews Band moves from #4 to #1 with Ozzy Osbourne, Foreigner and Peter Frampton each slipping a notch: Dave Matthews Band: 304,033 Ozzy Osbourne: 298,522 Foreigner: 291,369 Peter Frampton: 287,528 Cher: 209,544 Lenny Kravitz: 186,005 Mariah Carey: 162,741 Kool & the Gang: 162,012 Oasis: 113,052 Sinéad O'Connor: 103,458 Sade: 100,885 Jane's Addiction: 89,831 Mary J. Blige: 74,047 A Tribe Called Quest: 58,964 Eric B. & Rakim: 36,157 The bottom 11 vote-getters (#5 thru #15) haven't changed places since I first posted tallies five weeks ago. The chart action here is like a 1982 AT40 countdown .

As of noon today, Mariah Carey has a 51 vote lead over Kool & The Gang for 7th place... 188,658 for Mariah, and 188,607 for K&TG. Meanwhile, Kool & The Gang has a 64,000+ vote lead over Oasis for 8th place... Also, Ozzy Obourne has dropped to 4th place.

It happened! Kool & the Gang 190,646 Mariah Carey 190,158 And just 16 hours later, Kool & The Gang increased their lead from 500 votes to 4,000 votes over Mariah Carey (201,162 to 197,126). Have to ask... and if my math is right... Mariah Carey has 25 Top 5 hits, exclusive of "All I Want For Christmas Is You". I am surprised she isn't polling better than 8th place. Do voters have "All I Want For Christmas Is You" fatigue? She may not quite fit into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame persona like other artists but if George Michael can be a top vote getter given his pop career... shouldn't Mariah be polling better?

Given Mariah's competition this year, she may not appeal as much to the typical voter as George Michael did during his nomination year. Plus, there's the possibility the posthumous/sympathy vote could have been in effect, too. I'd argue that George Michael may have been amore 'likable' personality than Mariah, which likely added to his totals. Mariah can come across as abrasive and aloof, whereas Michael seemed more humble. And despite the airplay AIWFCIY gets every year, she also gets a bit of 'just go away' heat due to oversaturation during the holidays.
