Shangri-Las lead singer Mary Weiss passed away January 19 at the age of 75. With her sister Betty and twins Mary Ann and Margie Ganser, the foursome began singing at local dances and sock hops. Artie Ripp signed them to Kama Sutra Productions and bought them to the Brill Building. They signed with Red Bird Records and as the Shangri-Las they charted in the Top 10 with "Remember (Walking In The Sand)", "Leader Of The Pack" (#1), and "I Can Never Go Home Anymore". Additional Top 40 Hits include "Give Him A Great Big Kiss", "Give Us Your Blessings" and "Long Live Our Love". The Shangri-Las split in 1968, but attempted a brief comeback in 1977. They reunited one last time in 1989 for a Cousin Brucie show at the Meadowlands. Mary was successful in the furniture industry through the years, including interior design, and managing a furniture store. She also was a furniture consultant to businesses in the New York area. In 2019, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honored the Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack", on which Mary Weiss sang lead, in its Singles category. Obituary
