Lou told some stories of Buddy Knox, Harry Belafonte, American Bandstand, Pat Boone, the Too Much Elvis song and Warner Brothers Records. Thanks for continuing to post these 50s countdowns. I have been listening to all of them for 4 or 5 weeks now (usually on demand on Wednesday afternoons). I have almost no familiarity with the songs from 1950-1955 except for those that made #1 on a weekly chart. By 58 and 59 I am pretty familiar with songs that made the top 20 on weekly charts, but I think I will listen to Lou's countdowns even on the later ones just to absorb some of Lou's comments. I did talk to my Mom about the Top 10 from January of 1954 and she remembered about half of the songs, but her and my Dad's favorite music was probably from the years 1946-1951. They got married in 03/1950 when they were 20 and 18.

Dave's doing March 1961 on 60s Satellite Survey. For being 3 years apart, definitely a lot of similarities (Billy Vaughn is on both countdowns!)

It's the "Best-Selling Pop Singles" chart from the Billboard issue dated February 11, 1950. (That's the magazine issue date; the chart says "For Week Ending February 3") I like how Lou's show focuses on the actual 1950s, unlike many oldies stations which have traditionally acted as the 50s didn't begin, at least musically, until about halfway through the decade and then extended through the early 1960s. I liked Norm N. Nite's "Remember Then" hour, but that "50s on 5" show covered years from 1955 to 1963. Thanks MKarns. How would someone access that chart 'Best-Selling Pop Singles"? It isn't in the Ultimate Music Database. For all things chart-related, try the Records and Charts Database (racpro.com). The subscription fee is $5.00 per month. You can look up the Best Sellers charts going back to 1940, when it all began. Also, give Barry's Hits of All Decades a look. Click on any particular year and you'll get all of the top-ten charts from that year on one page.
