One of the true music legends, Tony Bennett had died at age 96. Not much of a pop star, but loved all the same.

One of the true music legends, Tony Bennett had died at age 96. Not much of a pop star, but loved all the same. Tony reached the Hot 100 31 times during the rock era (beginning Jan 1, 1955). 13 reached the Top 40, including the 1957 Top 10 hit "In the Middle Of An Island". Tony had a few number ones in the early 1950's and of course, his best known song , I Left My Heart In San Francisco was a Top 20 hit in 1962.

Interesting you brought up the list of crooners. Tony Bennett always believed the spread of the concert microphone was the single most important technical event that was responsible for changing the face of music forever (definitely as it affected the musical career of Frank Sinatra, he thought). Also fascinating how for different individual artists the decade that changed the music might be different. For Tony reportedly it was the period between turn of the decades 1930s-40s and turn of the 1940s into 50s, before the producers and accountants he believed started consolidating the public reach of their talent exponentially. He loved improvisational Jazz of this period (especially Art Tatum’s) which in a way defined his own career.

I don't think there were any 1970-1971 AT40 Special Extras of Tony Bennett songs done by Casey Kasem himself.
And Ryan Seacrest never played for current AT40 an EXTRA (even OPTIONAL EXTRA) of a Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga duet.

I thought that Tony Bennett was an extraordinary talent-He didn't stay stuck in the past & was willing to record duets with younger performers such as Amy Winehouse & Lady Gaga-He'll never be forgotten that's for sure.

Per Pete Battistini's book "AT40-The 70's",Casey played Tony's 1963 hit "I Wanna Be Around" as an "AT40 Special" the first weekend of February 1971.
