So I am of the "love it" category. I mentioned in a comment above my appreciation for Chapman. I also have other reasons for loving the song. My reasons are silly but still make it unique for me.
1) In 1988 it was just different. And different was good.
2) She went to Tufts University. Big fan of the Jumbos!
3) The song went back up (I think) a notch in its initial run as it was starting to descend. And honestly (been listening since 1982) outside of "Abracadabra", "Down Under", "Rumors" by Timex Social Club, "Shattered Dreams", "Epic" by Faith No More, and "With You" by Tony Terry, I just don't remember songs pushing back up after descending in the top 40 from 1982 through 11/30/91 so I always thought that was cool. I am sure there are a few more but there aren't many...maybe "Always and Forever" by Whistle in 1990...but not many.

Following the performance at the Grammys, Tracy's version of "Fast Car" re-entered the Hot 100 at #42, and Luke's version is back in the Top 10 (at #8).
