We lost power at home for a couple of hours last week so I had to actually listen to the radio like in the olden days, and I heard this country guy singing Fast Car. It's really good. I guess it's #1.

It's slated to be #1 Country, and should at least make the top 20 CHR. Which gives Tracy Chapman the honour of being the first Black woman to claim sole authorship of a #1 Country song.

LOVED the original and pretty much EVERYTHING by Tracy Chapman. Such a unique and original talent. Haven’t heard Luke Combs remake. I’ll have to check it out.

"Fast Car" is climbing the Mediabase AC chart-Luke did a fantastic job covering this Tracy Chapman classic.

"Fast Car" is climbing the Mediabase AC chart-Luke did a fantastic job covering this Tracy Chapman classic. Agree -- the Luke Combs version stays true to the original, but gives it true country flavor. He did do a terrific job of covering a great song -- good to hear it brought back after 35 years...

Tracy Chapman should have had a song of her own singing cross over on the Billboard Country Chart.

Good remake. Ryan mentioned last week that it’s the longest Top 40 hit of the year so far clocking in at 4 minutes and 20 seconds.

The weekend edition of USA Today has a brief article on the new version of "Fast Car" by Luke Combs-Combs said he first heard the original version by Tracy Chapman in 1988 & absolutely loved it-The remake of "Fast Car" is presently at # 3 on the Billboard "Hot 100"-Chapman was also interviewed & she was absolutely pleased with Combs' version.

I will preface this by saying I am not a country fan, particularly modern country. I will also preface my statement that living in North Carolina, particularly not that far from Boone, Luke's whole "I went to Appalachian State" thing gets annoying. Particularly as someone who went to a rival school in Virginia.
That said: I think it is absolutely awesome. And in an era where remakes are few and far between, this is a welcomed addition to AT 40! Good for Combs, congrats on a whole new generation getting to see the amazingness of Chapman, and congratulations to Tracy for her accomplishment becoming the first black female songwriter to garner a #1 country hit!

Love the song, love Tracy Chapman. Love EVERY song on the New Beginning album. It peaked at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart.

Love the song, love Tracy Chapman. Love EVERY song on the New Beginning album. It peaked at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. So it seems like this song generates strong feelings both ways. Probably one of those love or hate, no middle ground songs. Curious as to why you feel about it as you do. As for me on the 'hate it' side, my top three reactions to it are: Repetitive, self-pitying, depressing.

I would agree with you MGA... her music hits deep and perhaps depressing and maybe self-pitying are accurate descriptions... at least as far as how you see it. For me, her voice is a bit haunting, there's an aching, loneliness and certainly sadness in a lot of her music.
It's a long story, I won't bore you with all of it... but it was 1996 when I first got her "New Beginning" album. I WORE IT OUT on my CD player. There's 11 songs on it that just speak to me in SO MANY ways... I'm sure we all know "Give me One reason"... but a few other classics are "Cold Feet", "At this Point in My Life", "The Promise", "Remember the Tinman" and "I'm Ready". For the most part, I could've just listed every track... just my opinion. Her style, her voice, her lyrics (she wrote all the songs on this album) are obviously subdued, deliberate... and for me, deeply thought-provoking.
I know that at times I'm drawn to music that causes me to feel that aching, lonely, sad, morose... even a bit dark... Tracy Chapman's music kinda lowers the lights in my world sometimes and makes me pay attention... I probably need that. Sorry for getting so deep... I also love "Shout" by the Isley Brothers... lol... maybe that's the opposite of Chapman's music... or James Brown with some "I Feel Good" :-) Love that too. Thanks for listening. :-)
Update... I've just spent some time listening to the whole album again and "repetitive" is another accurate description of some of her music... lol... but I still love all of it :-)
