The recent death of Billy Preston had me thinking: How many artists can you list that had both instrumental and vocal hits?
Here are a few to begin with!
Herb Alpert (hit #1 with both (only artist to do so!)) The Commodores (instrumental with "Machine Gun") David Seville (instrumental with "Armen's Theme") The Allman Brothers (instrumental with "Jessica") Earth, Wind, and Fire (two minor instrumental hits with Ramsey Lewis) Kenny G (Yea, I know! That's pushing it!)
Have fun with this everyone!

Found another three!
After reading AWB, during the same time period there was Quincy Jones, Rhythm Heritage, and B.T. Express!
(By the way, be sure to check my message about cartoon acts in this catagory!)

Another one from the seventies!
The Edgar Winter Group!
Hit #1 with "Frankenstein"! All their other chart singles were vocals!

From 1996, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen of U2 did a remake of The Theme from Mission Impossible.
