I was always disappointed that Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot never reached #1 on AT40. Imagine my surprise many years later to discover the song did reach the top spot in Cash Box--which makes one wonder about the accuracy of the charts.
May Gordon's family know that his music touched the lives of many, and I for one, am grateful.

One of my favorites by GL was in 1978 and recently featured on a Countdown of 1978--"The Circle Is Small." I think it peaked at #33, and IMO should have been way higher.

Only made it to #98 in 1971, but "Summer Side Of Life" is a wonderful song.
RIP Gordon Lightfoot

While I am not a big fan of slow-tempo songs, "Carefree Highway" is the only song of Gordon's that I enjoy.
"Daylight Katy" was also a chart hit in Canada, but did not make it to the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was released in 1978 - during a time when disco was at its prime. Though I personally think that, despite disco's peak in popularity, an average top 40 chart consisted mostly of classic rock.
He is best known in the US for "Sundown", and in real life, it looks like yesterday evening was Gordon's last sundown.
May he rest in peace.

Some years ago, whenever my alarm went off on Sunday mornings and I heard his song "If You Could Read My Mind" on 97.5 K-ROCK, I would feel a bit sad since it served as a reminder that the weekend was starting to wind down and it was back to work on Monday. Every reason for me to not enjoy Sundays.

One of my favorites by GL was in 1978 and recently featured on a Countdown of 1978--"The Circle Is Small." I think it peaked at #33, and IMO should have been way higher. I would say that about "Beautiful" which only reached #58. That's my fave song by him. RIP.

I can't believe that "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" got blocked from # 1 by "Tonight's The Night" by Rod Stewart-I totally enjoyed "Edmund Fitzgerald" & thought it would've been turned into a major motion picture-RIP Gordon, you were an outstanding singer/songwriter.
