Tom Leadon 70, passed away March 22 from natural causes.
With Tom Petty and Mike Campbell, Tom was a co-founder of Mudcrutch, precursor to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Tom left the band, relocating to California to be with his older brother Bernie. Bernie had split from the Flying Burrito Brothers for the Eagles.
He worked with Linda Ronstadt and contributed "Hollywood Waltz" to the Eagles "One Of These Nights" album.
Tom joined Silver in 1976. The one-hit wonder band would reach the Top 20 with "Wham Bam". Their success also inspired Tom Petty to successfully relocate his band to California.
Mudcrutch reunited in 2007 and would release Top 10 albums in 2008 and 2016.
Shortly after Tom Petty's death, Tom wrote and released a tribute "My Old Best Friend". He would perform at "Tom Petty Weekend" held in Gainesville, Florida in 2022.
"Tom Leadon was my deepest guitar soul brother, we spent countless hours playing acoustic guitars and teaching each other things," Heartbreakers guitarist and Mudcrutch co-founder Mike Campbell posted on Twitter. "A kinder soul never walked the earth. I will always miss his spirit and generosity. Sleep peacefully, my old friend."
"Tom had a friendly and outgoing personality and sharp wit," his brother Mark noted on Facebook. "He was a great and very funny storyteller. Tom loved his family, close friends and all of the Mudcrutch, Tom Petty and Bayjacks fans. He enjoyed meeting and talking with all of you. Thank you for helping to make his last years great ones. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed."
