Jim Gordon died March 13 at the age of 77. A press release noted that he died of natural causes following a long incarceration and a lifelong battle with mental illness. At 17, the acclaimed drummer turned down a UCLA scholarship to join the Everly Brothers during the mid-60s. He eventually became one of the Wrecking Crew drummers working on classics like "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys, and debut albums by Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash. He met Eric Clapton while working with Delaney & Bonnie. After they served as the part of the backing group for George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass", they formed Derek & The Dominos. Jim co-wrote the title track to the band's only album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs". Jim kept busy during the seventies, appearing on albums by Alice Cooper, Art Garfunkel, Steely Dan, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Jackson Browne and John Lennon among many others. Sadly, mental illness would derail his career. He tragically took his mother's life, stabbing her to death on June 3, 1983. He was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison, having been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Although he was eligible for parole after 1991, he remained incarcerated until his death. Obituary

A sad ending to a life that held the promise of much more music that we could've enjoyed.
