Gary Rossington, the last remaining founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, passed away March 5 at the age of 71.
No cause of death has been announced. He had heart-related issues over the past several years. It was his slide guitar playing that was one of the highlights of the anthemic "Free Bird".
A representative for the band confirmed the death and issued the following statement:
"It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today," the band said online. "Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does. Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time."
