Multi-Grammy award winner Wayne Shorter passed away March 2 at the age of 89. His publicist Alisse Kingsley confirmed his death at a Los Angeles hospital. No cause was given.
Wayne emerged on the jazz scene during the 50s and 60s as one of the mainstays in two of the most celebrated jazz groups in music history: Art Blakely Jazz Messengers and the Miles Davis Quintet. His last album with Miles Davis was the legendary "B itches Brew" in 1970. During this time with Miles Davis he also played with Herbie Hancock with whom he would develop a lifelong friendship.
After his stint with Miles Davis, he was a co-founder of Weather Report, releasing over a dozen iconic albums between 1971 and 1986. Upon leaving, he would continue to be active until his passing releasing solo and collaborative efforts through the years.
Regarding non-jazz efforts, Wayne's sax solo was a highlight of the title track from Steely Dan's "Aja" album as well as Don Henley's "End Of The Innocence". He played on ten of Joni Mitchell's albums from 1977-2002, and toured with Carlos Santana in the late 80s.
Singer and actress Tina Turner credits Shorter with saving her life. In Turner's 2020 spiritual memoir Happiness Becomes You, she states that Shorter and his then-wife Ana Maria provided Turner with critical refuge at their home for six months after Turner left her abusive husband, Ike Turner, in 1976.
One of Wayne's last tours was in 2016 under the name Mega Nova. The supergroup included Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, bassist Marcus Miller and drummer Cindy Blackman Santana.
In 2015, Shorter received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
In 2018, Shorter received the Kennedy Center Honors Award for his lifetime of contributions to the arts.
Shorter is survived by his devoted wife, Carolina; daughters, Miyako and Mariana; and newly born grandson, Max.
