Canadian drummer Floyd Sneed, best known for his work with Three Dog Night during their hit-making years, passed away January 27 at the age of 80.
Floyd's older sister Maxine gave him his first drum kit. At the time Maxine was married to Tommy Chong. Floyd eventually joined Tommy's band Little Daddy and the Bachelors in the mid-sixties.
After that stint, he formed his own band and moved to California. In 1968, he met Danny Hutton, Cory Wells and Chuck Negron. They had a contract with Dunhill Records and were looking for backup musicians. Floyd joined the group, along with Jimmy Greensp o o n, Michael Allsup and Joe Schermie.
After the group disintegrated in 1976, Floyd toured with the Ohio Players, and also was a part of the group SS Fools with the other Three Dog Night backing musicians. He was a part of the brief Three Dog Night reunion in the mid-80s, and regularly appeared on drums and percussion with Check Negron in concert.
Floyd's death was posted on the Three Dog Night Facebook page.
“Three Dog Night is saddened to learn of the passing of Floyd Sneed,” the band statement reads. “Floyd was an absolutely wonderful human being, a complete original and a sweetheart of a man. He was also an extraordinarily unique drummer who brought so much to Three Dog Night’s sound. Floyd broke many barriers both musically and culturally; he also influenced countless other drummers with his amazing technique. He will be greatly missed by all of us in the band and the many musicians, artists and others he inspired throughout his life. Rest in Peace Floyd.”
