During the Fall of '69, I watched the short-lived, ABC-TV show called Music Scene. If anyone remembers it, they weekly featured Billboard charts and artists performing their hit singles.

CHART DATE: November 29 The double-sided hit single received its first dose of poison in this date's issue of Billboard. Without a word of explanation anywhere in that week's 100 pages, the chart listings for "Come Together" and "Something", "Down on the Corner" and "Fortunate Son", and "Don't Cry Daddy" and "Rubberneckin'" were combined for the first time. The #7 and #21 positions were conspicuous in their absence from the "last week" column. This was because, in each of the first two cases, the higher-ranked side was represented there. On November 22, "Something" was #3, while "Come Together" was #7; "Fortunate Son" was #14, while "Down on the Corner" was #21. So, what we saw on the 29th was the Beatles record going #3 to #1 and the CCR record going #14 to #9. The Elvis record was a debut at #73 on the 29th. Personally, as this Fantasy chart shows, I'm not a big fan, retrospectively, of the policy change. At the time, had I been older than two, I would have gone berserk over it.In case you're curious, Record World was already combining the individual tracks at one chart position. Here's how the individual tracks stacked up in the lone holdout, Cash Box: "Come Together" held at #1 for a second week. "Something" dropped from #2 to #6. "Fortunate Son" held at #9. "Down on the Corner" held at #22. "Don't Cry Daddy" debuted at #55. "Rubberneckin'" didn't pop up on either the Top 100 or the Looking Ahead list of the "next 50."TW | LW | Title and artist | 1 | 1 | COME TOGETHER...The Beatles | 2 | 2 | BABY IT'S YOU...Smith | 3 | 6 | TAKE A LETTER MARIA...R.B. Unfortunately, there’s no right answer to the A/B scenarios. However, I always appreciated having double-sided titles listed as one single because that allowed one (or two or three) more artists to reach the Top 40.
And while on the topic, it’s interesting to note that, upon the #13 debut of George Harrison’s double-sided “My Sweet Lord” / “Isn’t It A Pity” one year later, Casey only played what eventually became the B side. I suspect this decision was based on Billboard’s single review (11/21/70) which listed “Isn’t It A Pity” as the A side.

I like to see chart action for each side of a single. It's cool to know that "Hey Jude" hit #1 and "Revolution" hit #12; that "I Get Around" went to #1 and "Don't Worry Baby" stalled at #24; that "Travelin' Man" topped the chart while "Hello, Mary Lou" joined it in the top 10; that "His Latest Flame" and "Little Sister" both were top-tenners.
