CHART DATE: March 29 This is Lou Simon's "pet" chart to use for the weekly '60s Satellite Survey shows. In that thread, the subject just came up again, because yet another new episode featured that same chart. I informed Lou about this anomaly a few years back, so he appointed me as his advisor on the matter. My job was to remind him every January, "Don't use 3/29/69!" Well, this first of the year, some "life stuff" happened, it slipped my mind, and so everyone got stuck with an all-too-familiar Survey. CHART DATE: May 24 The "new" #1 song has a fascinating production story. You all know the snare drum effect that repeats throughout, the one that sounds like a cannon going off. To make it happen, the producers -- Paul, Art, and Roy Halee -- flew the legendary Hal Blaine from Los Angeles (or El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles del Rio de Porciuncula) all the way to their studio in New York. They went out into a hallway and set up a drum kit inside an elevator. With the elevator doors open and the microphone positioned about 50 feet away to capture all of the reverb, Hal worked his magic. A 3,000-mile trip just to do that.
