This #1 song always makes me think of staying out late to play, with the time having changed at the end of April. What a fantastic time of the year, anticipating school vacation. It's right up there with the anticipation of late November/early December. And exactly six months apart! Imagine the whole year being like that.

It sure won't be the summer of '65 without that record. Hal Blaine had always been credited with the drums, but more recently even he admitted that he couldn't remember whether he played on it or not. Lou Simon did some digging and found out it was actually Frankie Capp. The distinctive pounding of rhythm to the brain on "The Beat Goes On" was done by Hal for sure.
