Rewind to Leap Day, 2012. Davy Jones had just passed away and, despite not being a Monkees fan, I tuned in to SiriusXM '60s on 6, now '60s Gold, looking for a tribute. It was a Wednesday, so I stumbled on Cousin Brucie's show. Ooh, the '60s sound kinda cool, I thought. Lou Simon came into the picture with his version of the '60s Satellite Survey, then Talk Talk -- and little did I know I would strike up a bit of a friendship with him. The Packers were formed by tenor saxophonist Charles Axton, the son of Stax Records owner Estelle Axton. Charles was a former member of the Mar-Keys, as was Steve Cropper, who played on the group's first recording and hit (HOLE IN THE WALL). Cropper was joined by Booker T. on piano and drummer Al Jackson for the recording. Leon Haywood, on organ, was among those who also played on the group's records. |
