Colon cancer took the life of Kim Simmonds on December 13. He was 75 at the time of his passing.
Kim founded British Blues rockers Savoy Brown in 1965. He was the lead guitarist and primary songwriter and the only constant member of Savoy Brown until his death.
In the late 60s, Savoy Brown began to gain a foothold in the US reaching #74 on the Hot 100 in 1969 with "I'm Tired". The band splintered in late 1970/early 1971. Three members left to form Foghat, but Kim soldiered on recruiting replacements from the band Chicken Shack. Former Chicken Shack member Christine McVie had joined Fleetwood Mac.
Kim also recruited Dave Walker, a vocalist from the Birmingham club circuit. They would tour America with Rod Stewart and Faces and release two commercially successful albums "Street Corner Talking" and "Hellbound Train". The single "Tell Mama" would peak at #83 in late 1971/early 1972. Also popular was their cover of the Temptations/Al Green "I Can't Get Next To You", and the epic title track from "Hellbound Train".
Through the years, between Savoy Brown and solo projects Kim took part in over 40 releases. Savoy Brown's last release was "Ain't Done Yet" in 2020.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah, and a daughter, Eve. No memorial plans have been revealed.
