Fleetwood Mac songbird Christine McVie passed away November 30 at the age of 79. Born Christine Perfect, she joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970 leaving her blues-based band Chicken Shack. She had married bassist John McVie in 1968. Through the years, her alto vocals and uplifting lyrics seemed to be the glue that held the band together. Though the band's career reached legendary heights with the addition of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, two of the three hits on their first effort together were penned and sung by Christine. "Fleetwood Mac" contained the Top 20 hits "Over My Head" and "Say You Love Me". Her largest hit with Fleetwood Mac was the #3 hit "Don't Stop" from "Rumours". She also contributed the angelic "Songbird" to the album as well as the hit "You Make Lovin' Fun". Other Top 20 Fleetwood Mac hits featuring Christine on vocals were "Think About Me", "Hold Me", "Little Lies" and "Everywhere". She would enjoy success as a solo artist with her 1984 self-titled album. It yielded the Top 10 single "Got A Hold On Me", and "Love Will Show Us How" which peaked at #30. In the 90s, Christine opted out of a 1994 tour. Citing an escalated fear of flying, she left the band in 1997. In 2014, Christine elected to reunite with Fleetwood Mac which also included the return of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. In 2017 the "Lindsey Buckingham Christine McVie" album was released featuring the rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. The four of them would tour, Stevie having launched her own solo tour with the Pretenders. Fleetwood Mac would reunite headlining the second night of the Classic West concert (on 16 July 2017 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles) and the second night of the Classic East concert (at New York City's Citi Field on 30 July 2017). She would continue to tour as a member of Fleetwood Mac until her passing. Obituary

Christine certainly penned some of Fleetwood Mac's best known songs and will be missed. RIP.

"Got a Hold of Me" was my only favorite McVie solo song.
Of her material with Fleetwood Mac, I like:
"You Make Loving Fun" "Hold Me" "Everywhere" "Save Me"
What other Fleetwood Mac members are gone? I know one of them was part of the original lineup before they made the top 40.
And aside from Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, what other members remain?
I'm surprised Stevie is still with us after this long, considering she smoked five packs of cigarettes a day (as mentioned on Pop-Up Video).

Peter Green, a founding member, passed away in July of 2020. Bob Welch passed in 2012. The current lineup is Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Stevie Nicks, Mike Campbell, and Neil Finn. Remember, Lindsey Buckingham was fired from the band in 2018.

Isn't Neil Finn the same guy from Crowded House?
And why was Lindsey Buckingham fired from the band?

Yes, Neil Finn was/is the lead singer of Crowded House. Lindsey's departure is explained in great detail on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindsey_BuckinghamScroll down to the section headed "2018-present: Firing from Fleetwood Mac, Solo Anthology, and Lindsey Buckingham."

In the weekend edition of USA Today, writer Melissa Ruggieri lists Christine Mc Vie's five best songs with Fleetwood Mac-They are as follows: ... & "Songbird" (1977). "Songbird" is an incredible song! If you have never heard it before, it's the first video featured below. I also loved "As Long As You Follow" which was Fleetwood Mac's first tune from their Greatest Hits CD (and first hit post-Lindsey Buckingham). I thought that song would be a Top 15 hit, possibly hitting the Top 10. I was a little bummed when it only reached #43 on the Hot 100... but it was a #1 tune on the A/C chart in early '89. ALAYF is the second clip below: Christine McVie just has one of those voices that can really hit me. She could sing Google listings and I'd get all tingly inside... .

I’ve been a Fleetwood Mac fan since the summer of 1982 when my cousin played me the Rumours album. That one event shaped my musical landscape for the rest of my life. I’ve seen the band every tour since 1990. I’m a fan of the entire band, every incarnation. Christine McVie has been on every album from 1970 on (the 2003 album, Say You Will features her playing on one song). So her passing hit me kind of hard. As your musical heroes get older you come to expect the news of their passing, nonetheless it’s still a shock. It’s like losing a family member. She will be missed.

It's hard being at that age when many of our musical heroes are older and at a likely time when they leave us. And you're right, even when their passing comes or is imminent, it still shocks the system. Ironically, less than an hour ago, I was listening to the 7/3/1982 AT40, and Casey told the story of the fake "Fleetwood Mac" before "Hold Me" at #22. 🙂 My parents had their "Rumours" album, too. (Who didn't? 😂) So I grew up on their music. I've also worked at their shows when they came to my area. Whatever merchandise they brought in, I helped sell it. (Just to clarify, I didn't work for Fleetwood Mac; just the venue it was being held in.)

I just finished watching 2 feature-length documentaries: “Fleetwood Mac’s Songbird - Christine McVie” and “Fleetwood Mac: The Dance” (a concert film); But my real reason for this post is to draw your attention to the following podcast: a fairly detailed 49-min. interview with Christine herself from 2017 in a conversation on an episode of the long running UK radio series “Desert Island Discs”. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b09jby2mIn this you’d hear her favorite Top 8 records of all-time (it includes: 2 classical pieces plus singles/tracks by Fats Domino, the Beatles, The Everly Brothers, The Beach Boys and Etta James and yes, one by Fleetwood Mac). Note: For copyright reasons, only a portion of each record is heard in this link. My big surprises after hearing the broadcast: Then 74-year-old Christine’s vivid recollection of her life in the 1950s and 1960s, and revealing times in the 15 years or so she was absent from Fleetwood Mac. I can’t help it but to wonder if magically Casey had access to even 5 minutes of this conversation, he would have had endless trivia about her and Fleetwood Mac to tell us. RIP
