This is rather surprising news to me... The singer famous for her big hit songs "Fame" and "Flashdance (What a Feeling)" in the 1980s, died early this morning in her Florida home. Cause of death is unknown at this point, and an investigation is underway. Aside from her top 40 hits, she also performed on the kids' show The Electric Company as one of the original members of the vocal group The Short Circus. Coincidentally, Premiere Networks is airing the November 26, 1983 episode this weekend which has Irene's song "Why Me?" on the top 40.

I remember seeing Irene on the Electric Company as a teen and having a slight crush on her. I was glad to see her success in Fame and was working in radio by the time Flashdance was racing up the charts.
She always had a beautiful smile and will pray for her family as they adjust to life without her.

Irene Cara was a very talented performer-My favorite song from her would be "Out Here On My Own" from "Fame"-Sorry to hear about her untimely passing.

I just went back and listened to her hits on YouTube Music, including "Anyone Can See" and her remake of "Reach Out I'll Be There," neither of which I'd ever heard before. Her voice, somehow, was both youthful and classic. When "Why Me?" came on, it was the original video, where she displayed some of her considerable dancing skills. And she could write an impressive lyric too. One of my favorite lines of all time is "Take your passion and make it happen." All that did was win the Oscar for Best Song!
On a sadder note, I always worry when the cause of death is unknown and needs to be investigated. It means there were few, if any, physical health issues. The worst case scenario is that she had been suffering from depression, perhaps severe. A quick look at Wikipedia shows no information on her personal life after 1991. We'll miss you, Irene.

Due to the federal HIPPA laws we may never know how Irene Cara passed away. When Kenny Rogers died, his family was out front saying it wasn't covid related. It's up to the family to decide.

I wonder if The Short Circus (featuring the late Ireme Cara) song from the 1972 Electric Company TV soundtrack album called "Hard, Hard, Hard" was released as a 45 single but it may have not made Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

A search on 45cat.com yields nothing by the Short Circus, with or without Oreme.

Misheard lyric, "Take your pants down and make it happen."

Mom always dreamed of being a dancer, so Flashdance was among her all-time favorite films, when Grandmother saw it with my Mother she said, "I never knew you wanted to be a dancer Carol." May Irene Cara rest in peace.
