"The Killer" has passed away.

Jerry Lee Lewis died Friday, October 28 at his home in DeSoto County, Mississippi. No cause of death was announced, but he had been in poor health recently suffering from pneumonia.

He was a true pioneer in the early days of rock and roll, although controversy derailed his rock and roll career.

Jerry reinvented himself in the late 60s, scoring 17 Top 10 singles on the country charts between 1968 and 1977. Four of the singles peaked at #1.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as part of the inaugural 1986 class. Earlier this month, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame. Being too ill to attend, Kris Kristofferson presented the award to him at his home.

He was the last survivor of the famed Million Dollar Quartet which also included Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins.

In a 1970 Rolling Stone interview, John Lennon said, “Dylan or Stones have ever improved on “Whole Lot of Shaking” for my money. Or maybe I’m like our parents: that’s my period and I dig it and I’ll never leave it.”

I saw Jerry Lee perform at a small outdoor venue in North Georgia, over 20 years ago, and it was a very interesting show. Apparently, a monitor Jerry Lee used was not working to his liking so he kicked it but then seemed to come alive and gave a much more spirited performance. I knew that I read before going to the show that he had a temper and he would sometimes show it on stage--well, he did that night.
