A heart attack took the life of Sam Gooden on August 4 at the age of 87. He would have celebrated his 88th birthday September 2. Sam was an original member of the Impressions. He started when the group was a quintet featuring Jerry Butler. In 1958, the group broke through with "For You Precious Love". Upon Jerry's departure, Sam and member Fred Cash continued through the sixties with Curtis Mayfield as lead vocalist. Sam's bass and baritone voice can be heard on hits like "Gypsy Woman", "It's All Right", "People Get Ready" and "We're A Winner". He continued to tour with the band until the Impressions retired in 2018. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, the former Gloria Driver; four children; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Obituary
