For all those who get bummed that radio is losing its locality and local 'flavor', WKDD in Akron is hosting their 7th Annual "Have A Heart, Do Your Part Radiothon" and raising money for Akron Childrens Hospital. Morning duo Matt & Angela have been doing this event since 1999 (back when legendary Barbara Adams was still on the WKDD morning show with Matt Patrick). The whole station gets involved, and it is definately a buzz in the area. I even went home for part of the weekend just to hear some of this years Radiothon.
I originally learned of the Radiothon when I went to tune to Rick Dees one Sunday back in 2003 (before AT20 was on the station and Dees was on Sunday mornings) and it wasn't on. The station essentially cancels all regular music programming from 5:30am Friday morning until 9:00pm Sunday night, with the exception of overnights. The Radiothon airs 5:30am-9pm Friday and 7am-9pm Saturday and Sunday. Last year they raised over $500,000 - and they are already past $400,000 for this years Radiothon.
You can see more info as well as pics and a live webcam on wkdd.com It truly is an incredible event each year, and even though this "hometown" station has been owned by Clear Channel for several years now, they are still making local headlines with their annual Radiothon.
They have pledge lines open and you can donate in numerous ways, such as 10x12 ($10 over 12 months) or a simple one-time donation. And in the month or two leading up to Radiothon (which always seems to fall the weekend following the Super Bowl) people all around the Akron area become "change bandits" and collect change and other donations from people in various establishments. Many restaurants and other businesses have "Change Bandit" jars available. It really is a big thing for WKDD.
For those who say radio "doesn't matter anymore" (not us, at least I hope I challenge them to come to Akron this weekend and listen to Radiothon. It's powerful radio, and it's all for a good cause.
And they still will run AT20 this weekend....tomorrow morning from 4am-7am. Normally something like this would get to me, but for WKDD's Radiothon, I'll let it slide.
