Guitarist and Nazareth founding member Manny Charlton passed away July 5 at the age of 80. No cause of death was announced. Manny would have celebrated his 81st birthday July 25. Nazareth was formed in 1968 and he remained with the band through 17 albums including their Top 20 seller "Hair Of The Dog". That album yielded their only Top 40 hit. Their cover of "Love Hurts" would peak at #8 in 1975. In an interesting twist, Nazareth did a revved-up cover of Joni Mitchell's "This Flight Tonight" for their "Loud 'n' Proud" 1973 album. Joni was impressed by their take of her song. Nancy Wilson was even more impressed. After opening for Nazareth on a tour with Heart and hearing "This Flight Tonight", Nancy admitted she used Manny's guitar riff as the basis for "Barracuda". Manny left the band in 1990, releasing more than a dozen solo albums spanning into the 2010s. He was chosen by Axl Rose in 1986 to produce Guns & Roses first album. Even though "Appetite For Destruction" was produced by Mike Clink, Manny's work could be heard on various GNR compilations and "B" sides through the years. Obituary
