OK, Pete and OWTC. Just because you're two of my favorite Forum members... "Get Ready" peaked at #3 in Record World and stayed in their top 100 for 19 weeks, a long time by 1970 standards. But only eight of those weeks were in the top 20 and two were in the top five. So it came in at #59 for the year, racking up 2423 points. Dann and Bill's formula emphasizes and rewards performance more so than longevity. If you were to take the point values for each weekly chart position and plot them on a graph, they would form something close to a parabolic curve. ("My Sweet Lord" spent only 15 weeks on, but 11 in the top 20 and nine in the top five.) Most attempts at a composite ranking of records involve a simple reverse-rank pattern, which plots out as a diagonal line. This method produces a ranking that is heavily skewed towards records with longer chart runs regardless of their peak. (I ran "Get Ready" and "My Sweet Lord" through reverse-rank, and the former outscored the latter, 1314 to 1262!) The parabolic curve, and a more thorough explanation of the formula I use, can be found by opening the following link to Bill Carroll's Ranking the Rock Era web page: ranking.rocks/methodologyLove this. Thank you, doofus67!

The Record World singles surveys have their own place in chart history. And certainly make interesting comparisons to Billboard's Hot 100, especially when aligned with an AT40 countdown. Good stuff!

Here's 1981.
As you may know, Record World published its very last issue the week ending April 10, 1982. "Physical," oddly enough, was still #14 on that chart (but off the Hot 100 entirely)!Thanks, everyone, for all the great feedback. I started this project in the first week of March while recovering from two stomach surgeries, and slowly put it all together. I'm glad that it turned out well.# | Title | Score | Peak and date | 1 | Physical | 15,621 | #1, Nov 21 | 2 | Endless Love | 12,794 | #1, Aug 15 | 3 | Bette Davis Eyes | 10,740 | #1, May 30 | 4 | 9 to 5 | 10,152 | #1, Feb 21 | 5 | Waiting for a Girl Like You | 10,080 | #2, Dec 5 | 6 | Jessie's Girl | 9350 | #1, Aug 1 | 7 | Morning Train (Nine to Five) | 8946 | #1, April 25 | 8 | Private Eyes | 8861 | #1, Nov 7 | 9 | Queen of Hearts | 8779 | #2, Sept 5 | 10 | Celebration | 8457 | #1, Feb 14 | 11 | Arthur's Theme | 8103 | #1, Oct 17 | 12 | Keep On Loving You | 7853 | #1, Mar 21 | 13 | Theme from Greatest American Hero | 7414 | #1, July 18 | 14 | The One That You Love | 7398 | #1, July 11 | 15 | Angel of the Morning | 6748 | #1, May 16 | 16 | The Tide Is High | 6676 | #1, Jan 31 | 17 | Medley [Stars on 45] | 6620 | #1, June 13 | 18 | Rapture | 6564 | #1, April 4 | 19 | Woman | 6217 | #2, Mar 28 | 20 | Kiss on My List | 6214 | #1, April 18 | 21 | Slow Hand | 5906 | #4, Aug 8 | 22 | I Love a Rainy Night | 5830 | #3, Feb 14 | 23 | Let's Groove | 5759 | #3, Dec 19 | 24 | Elvira | 5563 | #3, July 18 | 25 | Being with You | 5548 | #1, May 23 | 26 | Take It on the Run | 5460 | #3, May 23 | 27 | Young Turks | 5165 | #5, Dec 19 | 28 | For Your Eyes Only | 4877 | #3, Oct 17 | 29 | Start Me Up | 4677 | #5, Oct 31 | 30 | Every Woman in the World | 4661 | #3, Jan 24 | 31 | Urgent | 4472 | #3, Sept 12 | 32 | Who's Crying Now | 4372 | #3, Sept 26 | 33 | All Those Years Ago | 4183 | #3, June 13 | 34 | A Woman Needs Love | 4025 | #4, June 13 | 35 | Here I Am | 3791 | #4, Nov 14 | 36 | Just the Two of Us | 3721 | #5, April 25 | 37 | The Best of Times | 3412 | #6, Mar 7 | 38 | Passion | 3277 | #6, Jan 24 | 39 | I Don't Need You | 3186 | #5, Aug 1 | 40 | Oh No | 3182 | #5, Nov 28 |
