The Top 5 artists on the list all had at least one of their hits in 1992 or later, when the charts really started to slow down. Just wondering who might top the list if someone located each artist's song placement on the year-end countdowns, and then took an average of the two songs' rankings? The artist with the lowest placement average could be considered the Top Two-Hit Wonder. I wonder (no pun intended) if this might be a way of nullifying the slow chart movement during the 90s which gave Paula, Sophie, Tracy, Sixpence and Jamie what could be considered an unfair advantage. Of course, by suggesting this idea, people may be expecting me to do this ranking... ... but if time permits in a few days, I could attempt this. For years when AT40 did their own year-end ranking... would we use AT40's list or Billboard's list? giannirubino ... thanks for doing your rankings... this was fun to see this list take shape!

Notorious B.I.G. would have been a 2 hit CT40 wonder if "Hypnotize" made the R&R CHR/Pop chart top 40 reaches, but it didn't. Although "Mo Money Mo Problems" did.

These things have to be done when it comes to comparing 90s and beyond hits to anything before the 90s. Just a few posts earlier than this in another thread is a reference made to the weeks at #1 record being broken by "End of the Road" and so on. Songs had longer stays at #1, and on the chart once the BDS/Soundscan era began, making comparisons involving that time frame an exercise in futility.

4490 Sophie B. Hawkins
Interesting about Sophie B Hawkins is that she had three singles released from her second album and all charted on the Hot 100 (only one in the top 40). "Right Beside You" was a hit in late '94, "As I Lay Me Down" in '95, and "Only Love" in early '96 (I love all three songs). I can't think of too many other examples were just three singles released all hit in different years! One reason was because "As I Lay Me Down" spent so long on the charts and labels where hesitant to release other singles if one was holding on so long.

Hey, since you included a few Two Hit Wonders from the pre-AT40 era, I'd like to submit another very worthy one from that era, The New Colony Six. They were an awesome and underrated rock group from Chicago who started out as a garage rock band and later developed a smooth, sweet soft rock sound. Their only two top 40 hits were in that mellow vein----"I Will Always Think About You" (#22, 1968), and "Things I'd Like To Say" (#16, 1969).

Here's my list. My survey period is July 1970 through November 1991. Rankings and scores are based on the formula devised by Dann Isbell and Bill Carroll for the book Ranking the '70s. An asterisk denotes a duet, in which case the artist earned half the total points accumulated by that song. Sorry about the capital letters. I'm not angry; it's just faster. SO agree. The first one is good, while their second hit is simply pop perfection. Great call! The New Colony Six had ten Hot 100 hits and another five that bubbled under. The New Colony Six's first hit "I Confess" which peaked at #2 locally in early 1966 was so important in Chicago rock and roll history. "I Confess" ushered in an era where local and regional bands had AM radio airplay shoulder-to-shoulder with the hits of the day on the AM stations WLS and WCFL. New Colony Six, Shadows Of Knight, American Breed, Ides of March and the Buckinghams charted Top 40 nationally, but they had several additional hits that made the local top 40 charts. Then there are other bands like the Cryan' Shames (7 Top 15 hits locally), Del-Vettes, Little Boy Blues, Third Booth, the Flock, the Mauds, the Trolls, the Riddles, the Robbs, Five Emprees, Michael & the Messengers, Jamestown Massacre, Aliotta Haynes & Jeremiah, and the Mob that charted locally on the Top 40. Some of these singles reached the lower rungs of the Hot 100 or bubbled under. Styx's early single "Best Thing" is another example, and "Lady" was a local treasure a couple of years before breaking nationally. A good example of this phenomenon is the "Light My Fire". The Doors' chart topping smash never reached #1 locally. It was blocked by a 4 week run at #1 by the Cryan' Shames "It Could Be We're In Love", which only reached #85 on the Hot 100.
