Art Rupe, producer and founder of Specialty Records passed away April 15 at the age of 104. After beginning Specialty Records in 1946, he would help launch the careers of Lloyd Price, Little Richard, Larry Williams and Sam Cooke (with the gospel group the Soul Stirrers). Specialty Records owned publishing companies Venice Music (BMI licensed songs) and Greenwich Music (ASCAP licensed songs). During the 60s he moved away from the music business and starting investing in his own oil and gas company. In 1990, Art sold Specialty Records to Fantasy Records. In 2011, Art received the Ahmet Ertegun Award and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. ObituaryRock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction
