The New York Times has reported the sudden death of the Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim at age 91, the day after he celebrated Thanksgiving with friends.
He had one song make a memorable appearance on the Casey-era AT40, when Judy Collins's version of "Send In The Clowns" reached the top 40 in 1975 and returned for a more successful run two years later. Or am I forgetting other Sondheim songs from the chart?

Along with "Send in the Clowns" I remember Stephen Sondheim for a clip from Smokey and the Bandit in 1977, Brenda Lee and The Spinners also get mentioned! May he rest in peace.

"Couple of years ago this song won the Song of the Year Grammy for its composer Stephen Sondheim, and a Grammy nomination for Best Female Vocal for the pretty lady who sings it, up 5 notches to #25 this week on AT40, here's, Judy Collins, with, Send in the Clowns..." - Casey Kasem's American Top 40 from November 5th, 1977

Ahead of the 2021 Steven Spielberg updated film version in the next 2 or 3 weeks, several from “West Side Story”: including “Maria”, “Tonight” and especially “Somewhere” (Len Berry version #26 in ‘66 on Hot 100 & in the 80s both Barbra Streisand and Phil Collins covers hit Billboard AC top 10. w/ the 1961 film soundtrack at 54 weeks at #1 among the highest in the history of BB album charts.) RIP

RIP The 2021 Steven Spielberg movie remake of "West Side Story" was to have been released last year, but pushed to this year because of the COVID pandemic. And there's a revival of the Sondheim musical "Company" on Broadway (postponed from opening also from COVID) with a gender swapped lead cast.

RIP The 2021 soundtrack and its first single “Balcony Scene (Tonight)” is already out; with Tonight portion kicking in after 2 minutes of this medley/track. That brings me to mention the most bonafide version of "Tonight" by Ferrante & Teicher: (picked #8 Hot 100 in December 1961)

Just saw a review of "West Side Story" in the weekend edition of USA Today-Their critic gave it a rating of three & a half stars.

For those of you who have access to HBO, the 2021 version (with its 7 oscar nominations) will premiere at 8pm/eastern tonight (repeated tomorrow at 6:15pm). I’ve already seen it on the big screen, and its biggest surprise for me was the amount of Spanish dialogue it had but without English subtitles; Nevertheless Spielberg has constructed the film in such a way that does not prevent you from following its plot (even if you don’t know any Spanish or don’t know its story from the original 1961 movie version.) BTW, for fans of the movie themes of the 80s on AT40, I’ve noticed Turner Classic Movies airs “Chariots of Fire”, “Arthur” and “Fame”, uncut in the next 12 hours.
