It's very surprising that Elton John had gone two full decades without any top 40 hits, especially after he had at least one top 40 hit every year between 1970 and sometime in the 1990s. He's definitely had at least one top 40 hit every full calendar year during AT40's original run (1995 doesn't count, as the original AT40 ended in late January that year).

It's likely that his streak ended because top 40 radio became focused primarily on younger audiences, and most long-time/AC-leaning artists could only score hits on other formats going forward. By the late 1990s, big name artists like Elton, Rod Stewart, Phil Collins, Hall & Oates, etc. were either completely gone from CHR or were barely cracking the top 40.

Or maybe Billboard isn't counting "Candle in the Wind 1997" and "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" separately, since it was a double-sided single.

On this past weekend's AT40, "Cold Heart" jumped into the top 10 at #8. Ryan mentioned it was the first time Elton had been in the top 10 since 1994, with "Can You Feel The Love Tonight". He's certainly hit the top 10, even #1, on other charts since.

This shows just how sloooow the charts move in 2022.

Rebounding 28-35 in its 43rd week, Elt now has the longest Hot 100 stay of his career.
