Alto Reed, long time saxophonist with Bob Seger succumbed to colon cancer December 30 at the age of 72. Born Thomas Neal Cartmell, Alto was one of two members of the Silver Bullet band whose tenure spanned its entirety. Their relationship began in 1971 and it was Seger who gave him his name. He has performed with countless artists ranging from Little Feat to the Blues Brothers. Every Seger album beginning with "Back In '72" featured contributions from Alto. Not only did he perform at Seger's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, he also was a part of the Ventures induction performance in 2009 at their request. Can't help think of Alto Reed every time I hear "Turn The Page". It was one of his first recordings with Bob Seger, and one of their best. ObituaryBob Seger Tribute
