I have been listening to the old American Top 40 shows with Casey Kasem, and while listening to these shows, I noticed that when the shows moved into the Top 10, Casey would always say how many weeks a song was in the Top 10. I guess that was the inspiration for Casey's 2 Top 10 show, "America's Top 10", and "American Top 10".

I'm not sure I'd call it inspiration for those shows, but the top 10 has always been sort of more "sacred" territory than the rest of the chart. So Casey has always referred to weeks in the top 10 as well as weeks in the top 40. Even today on AT20, Casey still sometimes refers to how many weeks a song has been in the top 10.

I don't know if it was necessarily the inspiration. The Top 10 in any countdown playing more than just the Top 10 always has a special meaning. It's the best of the best.
In a format like AC Radio, "American Top 10" makes the most sense because many times it is only the top 10 songs that are known and well received.
As for the old TV show, remember, it was not four hours in length like AT40. You can only play so many songs in limited time. Therefore, Top 10 made more sense than say, "Top 13" or "Top 8"

I agree with Brett and Scott. If you ever see any old American Bandstands I think Dick revealed the Top 10. The Top 10 as scott said is just considered sacred territory. Not just for music, but most anything that can be ranked in some order.

American Country Countdown, which stemmed from Casey's AT40 (and was even created by Casey and Don), also separates the Top 10 from the rest of the Top 40. Bob Kingsley, like Casey, will often refer to an artist's Xth top 10 hit, or an artist's Xth week in the Top 10.
The "American" countdown shows (AT 10, 20, 40, ACC) also tend to give special stats for #1s as well (weeks at #1, artist's Xth #1).

By saying that, are you saying others do not? Rick's dont really but thats because he doesnt seem to acknowledge any stat other than #1

It's just a common feature on these 4 shows to separate Countdown (T20/T40) stats, Top 10 stats, and #1 stats. There are definitely others out there that do this as well. Sorry for the confusion.

I never heard Dees in the 80's and early 90's, but if the show is supposed to be a comedy show first, i'm not really laughing much

speaking of Dees, this is sort of off the subject but one of the pastors at the church I now attend in Orlando is named Doug Dees and he did a class I was in tonight, so I asked him of course...are you related to Rick? To my surprise, he said yes, he and Rick are distant cousins.
Dees's show was the first that came to mind as far as ones that don't acknowledge Top 10 stats, but the christian ones don't I do not believe, and I don't know that Country Countdown USA does either.

The Weekend Top 25 Christian Countdown will mention Top 10/#1 stats from time to time. Country Countdown USA, on the other hand, rarely announces any stats, and the host of that show is the man IN CHARGE of R&R's Country chart. And don't get me started on their "hottest song" feature at the beginning of each show. That's just as bad as Rick Dees and his dart board-chosen all request specials, except that CC USA does it EVERY week.

cool, also a fellow Weekend Top 25 listener as well. Yeah buddy. Of course, given the slow rate of the charts these days, I tend to alternate which weekends I listen to the shows. One weekend it'll be ACC and AT20, another it'll be WT25 and AT40, and another it'll be AT10 and ACC (usu. 2/3 weekends I listen to ACC).

I listen every week to WT25, Weekend 22, WT40 HAC, ACC, AT10, and AT20. Slow moving or not, I stilllike the music and the old songs played on some of the shows.
