I know Mark Elliott and later David Perry guest hosted for Casey during the 1989-1998 Casey's Top 40 years, but how come Charlie Van Dyke, who guest hosted a lot of AT40 shows in the 1980's (30 of them, all gathering dust in Premiere's vault), was never offered to guest host for Casey on Casey's Top 40?

I don't know the answer, though maybe CVD moved on after being passed over with AT40. Sometimes those experiences really leave a sour taste in one's mouth.
I thought Mark Elliott did a fine job filling in for Casey all those times. I definitely preferred him over David Perry. (Though I'll still listen to David's guest-hosted shows.)
CVD was my favorite original AT40 era guest-host, in part because I started listening in 1984, which by then he was a consistent fill-in for Casey when he needed time off.

Be lucky CVD never got a chance to guest host for Shadoe Stevens on AT40 as well. Rumor has it CVD once talked on the phone to current AT40 host Ryan Seacrest during one of Ryan's early years AT40 shows.

There is also the possibility that he had a broader contract with ABC that effectively would have prohibited stepping in for Casey under someone else's jurisdiction. I did find recently that AT40 wasn't the only ABC-related thing he did during this time - from 1986 to 1990, he also announced for WLKY, which at the time was Louisville's ABC (TV) affiliate. (Granted that's just one station, but my point is - what else was he doing for ABC at that point?)

I asked this same question before since CVD was my favorite guest host as well -- that is, did anyone know why CVD didn't follow Casey to CT40 and sub for him there. I think Pete B might have actually been the one to respond that a thought was since Charlie wanted the AT40 job but was passed over for Shadoe, he may not have had any interested in just being a guest host (after all, he'd already done it 31 times before, and now was told he wasn't good enough to be the full time host). Unfortunate, because Charlie was excellent and probably would've done well as Casey's replacement, though it's still hard to say if AT40 could've survived having to compete against Casey.

I randomly stumbled across this. Mark Elliott was heard on the 10/11/1997 show, in a commercial! Yep, if you have this show, listen after the very first segment. The commercial is for Disney's "The Jungle Book". Obviously, Mark has done lots of voice-overs for Disney for many, many years. It was fun to hear him at this point in time, when he was no longer guest-hosting top 40 shows.
