WXXM Rewind 92.1 FM Madison, Wisconsin is now playing part 1 of the AT10 Top 60 Christmas songs this Saturday morning. This show I know is spread the next 2 weeks, and thoughts on this will go in this thread...
FOR PART 1:
* The song to lead off - #60 - The Jackson 5's "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" - a song written in the great depression? I thought it even gained popularity more thanks to a 1970 Rankin-Bass special of the same name! ("You better not fight, you better not cry" quoteth Casey Kringle Kasem).
* Played as an extra: Jessica Simpson's version of "What Christmas Means to Me", gee...what is Jessica Simpson doing nowadays?
* "Step Into Christmas" ranked #57, by Elton John is a musical Christmas card, of course - without sending postage.
* Casey said Madonna's version of "Santa Baby", ranked #56, was released in 1989, but it was released in 1987 on the first "A Very Special Christmas" album/CD!
* Odd to hear played as an extra Barry Manilow's version of "Ave Maria", I remember WBBM B-96 FM Chicago (once the Chicago home of Casey's Top 40) playing a techno version of the original classic not covered by an artist version circa late 1992!
* Other great songs: John Mellencamp's "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" (ranked #55), and the Bing Crosby/David Bowie duet of "Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth (ranked #54).
* Unusual? The Supremes' medley of "Joy to the World/Hallelulah Chorus" ranked #51.
* Do you consider Wham's "Last Christmas" as a sad song?
* Did you know "Here Comes Santa Claus" by Gene Autry was inspired by the Hollywood Christmas Parade?
* Regarding OPTIONAL EXTRA #1 of Vanessa Williams' "Silver and Gold" - she added an extra verse not in the original song that's related to the first Christmas/birth of baby Jesus!
* Never heard of Carly Simon's "Night Before Christmas" which was OPTIONAL EXTRA #2.
* Is Nat King Cole's "Caroling Caroling" better than Nat's "The Christmas Song"? Speaking of the "Christmas Song", Michael Buble's version is MEH to me.
* 2 versions of Vince Guaraldi's "Christmas Time is Here" on the countdown - vocal and instrumental?
FOR PART 2:
* The #30 song to start off part 2: The Carpenters' "No Place Like Home For The Holidays". The next song at #29 is the famous Jose Feliciano "Feliz Navidad" which means "Happy Christmas" (or "Merry Christmas") in Spanish.
* Played as an extra: A song from "The Polar Express" movie called "Believe" by Josh Groban (It made the AT10 AC reaches late 2004-early 2005, although by that early 2005 time AT10 AC was dropped from Chicago AC station WLIT, but has current AT40 host Ryan Seacrest ever played this Josh G. "Believe" song as a OPTIONAL EXTRA in the past AT40 years?)
* Regarding #26: "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg - though Casey knows it may or may not be a Christmas song but may be a seasonal song.
* I like it that Casey called Andy Williams "Mr. Smooth" when leading into #24 "Happy Holidays/The Holiday Season".
* I never heard Manheimm Streamroller's "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (#23) or even as an extra "Joy to the World/When Love Came Down" by Point of Grace. Anyone remember Point of Grace?
* Why would "Ruldolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" by Gene Autry be ranked #21? It should have been ranked higher!
* 4 versions of "Winter Wonderland" in the top 60?
* I liked the Carpenters "Merry Christmas Darling".
* Casey talked about the German Christmas tree name of "Tannembaum" to tie in with Vince "A Charlie Brown Christmas" Guraldi's "O Tannebaum"
* Did you know "I'll Be Home For Christmas" (ranked #19) is a World War II song dedicated to the missing or something?
* "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby ranked #5? #2 was Whitney Houston's "Do You Hear What I Hear" and at #1: "The Christmas Song" by Nat King Cole (written by Mel Torme while on a hot desert in Palm Springs, California).
* And one of the extras was a Point of Grace song called "Joy to the World/When Love Came Down" (And I just bought for $1 at some thrift/second hand/resale shop today that Point of Grace CD with the song on it!)
